i purchased a Spectre CAI last fall and so far have not been very impressed, mostly with fitment of the product. the air tube did not fit well at all and i could not even get it to bolt down where it was supposed to leading to it pulling out of the throttle body. FAIL! just this last weekend i built the Homeade pvc intake and it seems solid as all get out. just kind of bummed i bought a $150 air filter box. dang.....

If I were to do the homemade CAI, what filter is reasonably priced to go along with that? I looked online at Autozone and they want $53 for a filter......just doesn't seem right if the pipe costs $5 to spend $50-60 for a filter.
. Also, where can you get 3 1/2" pipe and fittings? At Home Depot by me they only have 3" & 4" ? The inside diameter of my TB is 3-3/16" (almost 3-1/4").....so 3" pipe would be a little restrictive. I'd rather have the whole pipe(about 3') a little big and the only restriction be the TB itself. Is there a kit to make any hoodscoops really work and bring in cool, filtered air?

In a word no. There isn't a hood with a built in filter. Spactre has a good universal one that you only buy once. 35.00 not too bad. Youclean it with a kit. every year, twice if your bogging regularly. I have since switched too the afi system with a air box mounted on the fender well. I also had too do some cutting too get it too fit btw. But the price was dirt cheap, no way near the 150, previouys poster paid. I like the sound and the performance. I think it has something to do with the design, not sure. But custom cai's are a vast improvement from stock, keep the faith. make it work.

Yeah, I didn't mean a built in filter, but hood scoops actually made to function, similar to the hood scoops and air cleaner set-ups of the late 60's and early 70's muscle cars. One of you enterprising guys out there should design and patent one ![Icon Clapclap](https://dodgeforum.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_clapclap.gif)

Sorry I didn't see this until now.
I used 3" diameter PVC, used regular PVC cement to seal the joints. I had planned on buying an Amsoil filter to put on it, but I ended up leaving my K&N 3 1/2" clamp on. Fits perfect, works and sounds great. I'm actually planning on buying a couple better permanent brackets to put on it today, I'll put an updated picture up once I get it done.

The heat issue has been discussed many times. Honestly only time will tell. Schedule 40 is rated for 140 degree liquid to run through it, air temps can probably be a little higher. So far my CAI has only seen a 90 degree day, and the Intake Air Temp reached around 105 (According to my Edge programmer). As long as my intake air temp doesn't get above 150, I'm not going to worry, right now it's solid, still looks good, and doing it's job...
****EDIT****
After talking about my intake for awhile now, and looking at the horrid pictures of it, I've finally finished it up. No more Zip-Ties, and some nice paint:
