I offroad my truck alot and the engine bay is filthy. I don't plan on doing anything to my filter for at least another 15k miles. But, I've got an Airraid. Doesn't matter though, I think they're all the same.

k and n suggested cleaning and recharging filter every couple of oil changes. you can buy the kit for like $10. i do mine every 3rd or 4th oil change.

Airaid filters have an extra synthetic layer to help trap smaller particles.

I do a good bit of off-roading and traveling on dirt roads when I'm up at the farm and noticed that not only was my K&N filter getting dirty and requiring cleaning at twice the norm, but my oil was looking particularly dirty on changes.

About two years ago I bought a pre-filter from K&N and put it on. They claim it only inhibits about 2% of the airflow. BIG difference, the filter stays much cleaner and my oil at change time is A LOT cleaner.
I just wipe the pre-filter down with a soft cloth every once in a while, but hell, if it ever gets bad dirty, I believe you can throw it in the washer and dryer...
