Default Motor Oil, what's the best?

Okay, my father in law has a Ford with 255,000 miles and has always used Wal-Marts brand motor oil. I asked him why and he said "If it didn't meet everything for a engine lubrication needs, they wouldn't sell it. Why would I pay extra money for oil company's trying innovative ideas in my engine?"

I use Synthetic in my new Jetta and the wal-mart stuff in my old Blazer, but just regular 10W-40 in my 1998 Dodge. And would top off with synthetic, when I needed that extra 1/2 quart after start up.

I need to do my first oil change tonight before I head out towing my camper. What should I use and why?

I use Mobil 1 synthetic. Works for me.....but for years I used Castrol GTX and then Castrol Syntec. I have never had any issues with any of them.

I will mention this, and left it behind on that thread...

**********DO NOT buy a filter that doesn't say the following:

This filter meets or exceeds all OEM specificatins for an oil filter.

FRAM filters do NOT say this. IT WILL void a warranty!!!*********

this is a opinions thread all the way, your basically askin pepsi or coke...your gonna get a ton of answers, mobil1 has always proven better than most oils at a reasonable price...and available at walmart for a decent price, although you mentioned mixing dino and synthetics im not sure that helps anything never hurt to run one or the other....

The only one of my rides that gets synthetic is the Mazda and only because of the turbo. All get Pennzoil. As long as the oil meets whatever is current (SG, SE, whatever), it should be fine.

I am currently running Mobil 1. Next change is going to be Amsoil with their filter. Then I can go 20-25k miles between oil changes

I use Amsoil and love it...my little bro is an Amsoil dealer so I get it as cheap as any other syn. oil. I have MDS so I use 0-W20 and only go about 10K cause I was told that over time or I guess miles it actualy thickens which adversely affects the MDS.

actually the longer an oil is used in an engine or hydraulic pump, heat over time actually breaks down the viscosity of the oil, i myself wont trust any oil for that length of time....5k for me...

A buddy of mine has an 04 that he runs with amsoil 5w 30 and their filter. He changed his at 25,000 miles and sent them a sample to chemically test. The results came back saying it had 17% oil life remaining after the 25,000 miles. That was good enough for me, that is why I am going to switch, and he is as hard on his truck as I am, if not harder.

I agree, but different oils retain the vicosity better than others. Some conventionals are only good for 3k, others much more. How you drive has a big effect as well.
