Default wheels and tires on a 2500 Mega Cab 4x4

I have searched the stickies and other threads and can't seem to find a definitive thread for the 2500 4x4 info. so here are some questions maybe you guys can help me with. I have the stock 17" wheels with 265/70-17 BFGs on there now. 45k miles and theyre nearly done.

>>>I am thinking of going to an 18" wheel...any reason I shouldn't?

>>>Also, will the 295/70-18 Terra Graps (34.4" tire) fit in there without a lift? The 4x4 is already pretty tall, it looks like there is tons of room in and around the tire now...am I missing something?

>>>Going to a setup like this am I going to lose much efficiency? I get 18mpg now unloaded @70 and 12mpg towing 8k trailer @65.

Anybody got any pics of this setup? I'm leaning towards the XD Series Monster 18" and either the 295 or the 285 if there is going to be fitment issues. Maybe you guys have some suggestions of different wheels/tires you can show me pics of.

Thanks in advance.

-Eric

Are your stock wheels 17" polished forged wheels?? If so keep them. Go price off road forged wheels and you will see why.

1" of rim isnt that much of a difference and could cost a lot in the long run for a set of 18" rims and tires v/s just new tires for the already paid for 17" rims you have now.

Is it worth it to you? Thats your decision.

35" tire will for the 2500 4wd with no issues so no worries there.

A 285-70/17 will fit on your wheels (same size as power wagon) but the gas mileage will suffer. I'm doing 14 - 15 combined on mine, depends on how much I have to use 4wd during the winter

Steel plastichrome 17s. I wish they were forged.

Thanks for the info...was sure they would fit but wanted to some confirmation. The reason I was considering going to 18s is because I've heard that when you put a tall tire on the 17 it can get squirmy or feel like the truck is riding on a mushball. but I guess the 295-70 would feel the same weather it's mounted on the 17 or 18 right? same sidewall...seems like it might actually be mushyer on the 18 now that I think about it due to the leverage arm of the extra half inch of radius. hhhmmm.

As far as cost goes...you're right...it's not that much of a change for the money. but if I can get $50 each for my OE 17s that will make it a bit easier to swallow. going to a 20" wheel and tire is a pretty big difference in cost from the 18.

you're getting 14-15 combined loaded/unloaded and using 285s?...that's exactly what I get combined with the 265s.

I saw a set of 18 inch wheels with 35x12.5 on them. look was awesome but not completely overkill. 295-70x18 will be nearly an inch narrower and half inch shorter. should be a good compromise from a full on off road tire to a multi-use tire... more for looks than anything. My megacab looks a little short and skinny to wear the name mega proudly.

any more info or pics would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys,

-E

any more comments about putting a 34.5" tall 11.5" wide tire on an otherwise stock 2500 4x4 diesel with 18" wheels? i.e. - 295-70x18 nitto terra grap.

any more comments or pics would be greatly appreciated.

What I want to know is how in the hell you get 18MPG unloaded and 12MPG towing a heavy trailer. I'm calling BS. Or do you have a cummins?

I check my MPG's every fill-up (with a calulator, not the overhead "lie-o-meter") and Im usually right around 12.5 MPG's with mine. One tank I calculated 13.4, but that was mostly downhill driving I think
