are eco-boosts an endangered species?
ok i've heard all the rave about it, but ive seen one of them...yes ONE. for being "the best and most fuel efficient" engine out there im not too sure if the people are buying them. maybe its just my area in upstate ny but only seeing one of the best that ford can offer since they came out is pretty lousy if you ask me. and theres a decent sized ford dealer in my town and another about 8 miles down the road full of them sitting on the lot. just thought id ask to see if anyone has seen them at all. my buddy is a huge ford guy and he wants to get one when he has some cash saved up. i told him to just buy a ram and save the embarrasment of driving a furd
Dude, in order to respond to your post here, I have to admit to something I hoped wouldn't get out. My next door neighbor is a converted Ford guy. When I first moved here, he drove a 2500 Duramax that he swore by. To my surprise, he came home one day with a new F250 PowerStroke. He buys and sells timber for a living so he puts in a lot of miles and many of them are in places I wouldn't want to venture. The biggest surprise (aside from his switching from Miller Lite to Bud Light) was a few months ago when he showed up with a F150 Eco Boost. He absolutely loves it. It is better on gas and he claims it put the regular V8 version to shame when he was considering between the two.
Now for the hard (for me) part. Weekend before last I towed my RV home from the campground where it had been all summer. Apparently we had had tons of rain and when I pulled around to my backyard to circle around, both my truck and one side of the RV just sunk and stopped dead. I couldn't budge in 4 hi or 4 lo with the RV hooked up. I decided to just unhook and leave it where it was until things dried up a bit. The next day I went back out and hooked up and tried again and just dug deeper holes. As he was pulling out of his driveway, he saw me and drove back to give me a hand. He grabs a strap and says he'll hook up to me and help me out. I knew I'd never hear the end of it if he pulls me out but I put my tail between my legs and said let's give it a try. I don't think he even spun a tire. I had my truck in 4 lo and was pulling while he was pulling me, but we came right out as if it was no effort at all. I don't plan on buying one, but I have to admit I was impressed.
I've seen several eco's on the road around here. Here, Dodge rarely comes into truck conversations unless it's about diesels. The place is mostly Ford vs. Chevy. One of the main reasons is probably that our Dodge dealer was one of the ones that were closed down several years ago, so the nearest place to buy one is an hour away.

Well there are tons of them around here. I’d say at least half of the new ones have the eco badge on the side. The turbo really pumps up the low end torque which will blow the competition away in terms of towing and driveability. My buddy traded his F’er in for a new one specifically for the boost. He will be the first to admit the gas mileage is marginally better than his 5.4 based on how he drives, but he doesn’t regret it with the extra power. If I was in the market for a new truck, I would seriously consider a ford for that reason only. Now reliability is to be seen but ford was never able to figure out their powersmokes (6.0 and 6.4 versions) so hopefully the boosted 3.5 will stand the test of time. I’m definitely not a ford guy even though I’ve owned fords, but boosting a small engine was their smartest move in a while. Now that everyone has shelved small diesel in their LD trucks for who knows how long, I think ford will take back a lot of the market they’ve lost by sticking with that 5.4 for so long.

I dont stand next to one Truck Company but Ford did do a pretty rigorous testing the Eco Boost like for example the 100,000 mile drive on a Nascar Track then the motor tear down after, and yes i know its easy to make things look good but if i was in the market for a new truck i wouldnt give a tough V6 the cold shoulder.
And at Hemi Greg we have all been pulled out by worse, (i used to own 4x4 ranger and there wasnt much i couldnt get unstuck).

so it might just be the area im in. ive heard all the stories about the torture testing and what not but i was just curious to see if anyone knew or knows of a person that has one and what they think about it. by no means will i switch to ford, i am just curious. and yes, many people have been pulled out by far worse than a brand new truck haha. i have been pulled out (with my dads suburban) by a small kubota tractor that was as rusy as anything ive ever seen and it seemed on its last leg.
There's an enlisted guy in my ROTC unit here that got an EcoBoost last year and besides his MySync (or whatever its called) crapping out on his like 5 times he loves the truck mechanically. I'm trying to convince him to lift it lol. But I've seen a few around. Not too many though. I've honestly seen more Raptors rolling around Tampa and the Ft. Lauderdale area then EcoBoosts. I love my Ram but I wouldn't hesitate to jump into one of the new fords if I got a better deal on one than a Ram. I wouldn't touch a chevy or gmc though. They may be the stereotypical "american truck" but their interiors are so substandard compared to the Rams and Fords.

I know most anything would have helped get me out, and you guys know it, and even my neighbor knows it. Doesn't stop him from bragging to everyone that will listen that his new blue oval pulled out a hemi with 7500 lbs hooked to the back of it.
