Default 4.7 mileage and towing

just got back from a 700 mile trip (350 each way). my '07 1500 4x4 QC 4.7 with 2000 miles got 9.8 mpg pulling a 3500# trailer in tow/haul mode. this is a 7x14 enclosed tandem axle trailer (lots of wind resistance). no problems power wise but it ran at about 2700 rpm at about 67 mph on cruise.
just thought i'd report it if anyone was interested.

Good to know............

Was it through hills and elevation changes? Mostly flat? Are you running a SuperChips programmer and what program was it on if so?

I'm getting ready to buy a trailer for camping and I'm interested in what/how it's going to effect me $$ wise for the gas.

I can tell you he does not have a Superchips, they don't support the 4.7. I know SCT is planning to, I think it might even be out now!

its 100% stock. i went from pittsburgh, pa to just east of indianapolis. it was mostly flat. this was going by the EVIC but when i calculated the first leg manually it was 8.9 while the EVIC read 9.5. that was the only time i did it manually. on the trip out it read about 9.3 but by the time i got home it was at 9.8. it seemed a little more downhill on the way home but not much. passing wasn't an issue if you just put your foot down a little. it would downshift and rev to between 4000-5000 rpm.
i don't think it pulled quite as easily as my 96 GMC with a 350 and probably was harder on fuel but its tough to beat GMs mileage. plus this one looks a little prettier

I've made several 6 hours trips with my 02 4.7 4x4 hauling a 6widex9longx7tall enclosed cargo trailer loaded down with about 2500# of materials. i got about 13mpg on these trips cruising up to 75mph with the engine sitting around 2200rpm and only ocassionally kicking up to 3000 on steep hills.

what tire pressure are you running for towing onthe highway? the tire pressure seems to have a huge effect on the mpg.

I have a 2002 Ram 1500 that I tow a 3000 lb Pop up, I get about 13 to 14 with it. Without towing it I get 16 to 17 average.

I tow a double jetski trailer with2 yamaha 4 - strokes, with trailer total weight is less that 3000lbs. I average between 12 and 13 on the highway, between 15 and 18 without them in tow.. My wife's 4 runner gets 19.5 towing them. Love the truck but fuel mileage always sucks.

I have an 02 QC 2WD with 81K miles, with a Leer Camper Shell, Flowmaster Single Exhaust, Bosch Platnum Plus2 plugs and a K&N FIPK. I tow a 4700#, 25' Travel Trailer (approx 6k with all the gear in it) and get 10 - 10.5 MPG. Would like to get more but that is all she's worth. Thinking about the Jet Performance Chip but I'm not sure if it will warrant the cost.It does okon the open road (flat) but belly aches on them hills. I'm open to any suggestions....

i pulled the same trailer a few weeks ago on a short trip probably 80 miles round trip and got about the same mileage (9.5). this was a little more hilly terrain. i left it in regular OD mode (5 gears) and still ran about the same RPM as it generally stayed in 3rd. i only have about 4700 miles on it now so maybe it will get better.

I have a 2002 3rd generation 4.7 automatic 1500 RC long bed 4X4. I pull a 6 wide 16 ft long 7 ft high livestock trailer with about a total loaded weight of the trailer at 4,000 - 4,500lbs, plus some additional weight in the bed. I have many hills in my area and I never see much “flat land”.

I get about 9 - 10 miles to a gallon running a true 65-70 mph on the highway with the overdrive OFF. I have LT tires rated at 80 psi max but I normally run only 50 psi.

Use your tow/haul or overdrive off for towing. It is there for a reason.

Sounds like you are in the same ballpark.
