buying a ram and cant decide on which engine!!!
i just totaled my dakota and was gonna get a ram. i am looking at the 04 and up ram 4x4 quad cabs around my area. i found a few nice ones and was wondering if there is any big difference between the 4.7 and the 5.7 hemi and the cummins diesel

What's the 4.7's rated mpg? With the quad cab and being a 4x4i'd say get the hemi at a minimum...the truck by itself is a lot of weight to haul around.
If you can afford it definitely get the diesel....the power potential is incredible. The cost of diesel fuelis usually cheaper then 87 oct around here...except now-a-days it's 20 cents higher then premium.

What engine you choose, should be determined by your intended uses. If heavy towing/hauling on a regular basis is expected than either the deisel or maybe the Hemi would be the better option, the 4.7 probably would not be the best choose. I just took pocession of an '08 4.7 QC 4X4 with the 6speed manual and I could not be happier with its proformance so far. But then the '08 4.7 has been tweeked in a number of ways so its HP is rated at 310 by Allpar now and the manual tranny will get better performance out of it as well. I don't anticipate doing a lot of heavy towing with my rig however.

If you need a diesel then you probably know that already and don't even look at the gassers.Diesels arebig, heavy hogs though and the diesel engine and fuelare considerably more expensive which reduces some of the efficiency advantages of diesel over gas. If you plan to modify your 4.7 engine I'd say just get a hemi and save the trouble. If you're using the truck really as a car then the 4.7 with a 3.9 or 4.1 axle would do great. I've got a stock hemi 4x4 quad, 3.55 rear and love it, all the power I want and get 20mpg on the highway.

RE: buying a ram and cant decide on which engine!!!
I bought my 07 Hemi in June, hada 99 5.2 Dakota. I pull 2 ATV's in the summer and 2 snowmobiles in the winter. Let me tell you there is NO comparison between the power of the 2. The 5.2 struggled a bit and I could feel the trailer jerking me. With the Ram and the Hemi it's SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH. I'm even getting better gas milage with my Hemi 17-20 pending how my right foot feels. The truck wieghts 6700 pounds I think the 4.7 will struggle towing or not. I vote Hemi for pulling like I do or notand diesel if you tow everyday or so.

4.7L is a doggggg. slow. no power. esspecially if ur going 4x4 quadcab
5.7L hemi. major ***** for a gas v8 truck. way better fuel econ. verses a 4.7 cuz your not having to beat the motor for the truck to move.
Cummins all i gotta say is DAMN. if you can afford it DO it. endless possibilities for power. and decent milage cause you dont have to get on it to move.
anything but the 4.7L its a loaf even in a reg cab 4x4.
