What exactly does a "superchip" do, and how? Economy setting?

Hey everyone,
There have been many threads in the last few days about the Superchip tuner or Flashpaq. As I understand there are three different settings, including one that is the economy setting. As we are dealing with crazy gas prices, how does the economy setting work? What exactly does the Flashpaq do to the truck?
If the Flashpaq's work so well, why does Dodge leave it up the the aftermarket to deal with this aspect of the truck? Does Dodge set the truck up at the factory to meet the needs of "most" people? Are the Flashpaq's putting extra stress on the engine, trans, etc? Is Superchips's positive that the dealer could never tell that you had a tuner on the truck, if you return it to the stock setting before it is dropped off for service?
Thanks,
Zack

I am also interested in fuel economy for this truck. Most people seem to be using the performance setting which requires 91 octane. However does it increase gas mileage enough to save on fuel costs or is the economy mode the way to go. How does it affect fuel economy?

I've ran 4 tanks through my beast set on the performance tune with an nice little 2.5 MPG gain, and also some nice power and very good shifting. I'm getting ready to set her to economy and run a couple of tanks through her, just to see the difference, and see if I can still keep the 2.5 MPG gain. Seeings how I burn through a tank relatively quickly the economy tune will be my route if I can still achieve the increase in gas mileage. I haven't had to pull the trailer to a job site in the last couple of weeks, so haven't even tried the towing setting yet...
As far as why Dodge doesn't do this already:
Comfort. The shifting is harder and firmer. Most customers don't want this.
Towing. Yes you have a tow/haul selector, however that only changes the shift points and turns MDS and OD off. The truck is always putting out enough power to tow, even when you really don't need it. With Superchips, you can choose when you're towing, and in economy you're not wasting that extra power.
Dodge just sets a good baseline program in there to accomodate most customers. Some customers want to go fast, some customers want to tow 9,000 lbs, and some customers are mainly grocery getters. The program that's in your truck right now is to cover all the bases....

I'll be looking to get a system once I pick up my truck. As the truck is new, I'll want a setup that won't void the warranty and can be taken in and out very easily. Any suggestions?
