Best place to run a wire from engine bay to cab?
I am going to buy some driving lights tomorrow, but this time I want to do it right. No more redneck drilling a hole thru the firewall. Where has everyone here run their auxiliary wiring? Is there any factory opening that I can take advantage of, preferably in a place where a non-flexible fat *** like myself can get to easily? Thanks.
That hole will come out to left side of the steering column inside the cab, will have to unscrew that knee panel on the driver side to get to it....And whats redneck about drilling a hole in the firewall? Thats the right way to do wiring
Well, when you use a 1/2" drill bit to run a 20 gauge wire just because it's convenient, then "seal" it up with duct tape, that's pretty redneck. This is my first vehicle that's worth anything, so I'd rather not cut or drill it unless absolutely necessary.
well...then drilling a hole isn't the redneck part...it's the sealing it with duct tape part that is. rubber grommets ftw,

Look on the firewall, just inboard of the brake booster. There should be a black plastic plate, shaped like a stretched diamond. It covers where the clutch pedal linkage would go (this assumes you have an automatic
). Very easy to drill through and run wiring. All the cables I've added go through it.

I used the plate that MikeH is talking about to run the video and power wire for my reverse camera and I'm going to use the same hole to run the wire to a light to show me when I'm in MDS mode. If you want to do it right, then drill there and either use a grommet or some type of black silicone but to be honest, no one is going to see it there so just take out the plastic cover, drill a hole 'just' big enough for the wire and bolt the plastic plate back on.
