performance air filter
i got my oil changed yesterday and the guy who changed my oil recommended that i get a new air filter and some of my friends told me that i could buy a performance air filter for the same price off the internet or a store and it would make the truck sound better and increase gas mileage...do any of you guys know where I can find a performance air filter (probably K & N) anywhere? should pepboys have them or advanced autoparts?
Thank You
Thank You
Drop-in k&n's are at most autopart stores...buying a amsoil synthetic filter http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaa.aspxis the way to go though. It's a non-oiled filter that just needs to be vacuumed out instead of cleaning and re-oiling a k&n or similar filter which is messy and gets expensive. If you take care of either filter you'll save money in the long run...problem is most people don't.
im hearing that the performance air filters are a waste of money because you don't see a great benefit as to horsepower or gas mileage and i also hear that they are good and make your vehicle sound better and get better hp, but I have no idea whether to get a performance or a regular air filter
Performance gain is slim if any and the sound will be the same with just a drop-in filter...if you get a whole CAI kit you'll hear a sucking sound and get slightly better performance. The gain from "performance" drop-in's is that it's reuseable....considering a paper filter is $10-$15 a pop you'll save money sooner or later. They do take somemaintenance(some more than others) and if you slack in that department you'll have a clogged filter that hardly flows any air.
alright thanks for the advice and info..i'll most likely get a regular air filter because there is non point in paying 50 some odd dollars for something that you won't get a good benefit from and can get the same sound and performance from something that will cost 40 dollars less, thanks for everyone's advice
Standard paper filters DO NOT flow nearly as well as a good quality fiber filter. Plus, you'll pay $15 for a paper filter EVERY 10-15k miles. A $50 K&N or similar drop-in will easily last the life of the vehicle with simple maintenance every 25k miles or so. And although the Amsoil is a very good, high quality filter, I've been using K&N drop-ins and CAI's for 25 years. I can get two filter cleanings and re-oilings (that takes about 10 minutes plus drying time) out of a $11 recharge kit. It's not messy if you half know what you are doing and I sure wouldn't call that expensive.

It's a lot messier then breaking out a vacuum...there's no dry time...there's no $11 kit x 2...they cost the same at purchase...and you don't have to worry about over oiling. Over oiling is a major prob for vehicles with a MAF (we don't have)...the oil gets on the filaments and will need to be cleaned along with the filter. Not everyone has been cleaning the filters for 25 years...people do over oil and they put them put in before drying.
Not to mention when the filter is dirty and the oil is dried out the filtering abilites are garbage....the oil is the only thing that lets the cotton filter out debris. I guarantee over 50% of the k&n drop-ins out there have never been cleaned and re-oiled...point is people will clean them more often if the job is easier and free.

There is no MAF to foul on the Hemi, so it won't harn anything.
I just installed a K&N filter in my 08 yesterday.
I have had one in my 88 Mustang 5.0 since 9000 miles (163,000 now) and it has never left any dirt or oil on the inside of the air intake and has never fouled my MAF filaments. Overoiling when cleaning and reoiling is what causes problems. I also had one in my 01 F150 for 6 years before I got traded it in on my RAM and had no oil issued with it either.
Now I just need to get rid of the silencer and replace it with an Airaid type tube.

Everything evolves over time and gets better...it went from paper filters, to the oiled cotton, to foam and so far the best is synthetic fibers. If you guys would just jump off the k&n bandwagon and stop being sobrand loyalyou might be able to see it...but it's your money buy what ya want. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaa.aspxThe Amsoil filters are also $10 cheaper..
