Default Is this legal???

Ok so i think i fried the wirring in my steering collum that controls my wipper motor. I need to get this fixed so i can get my truck inspected. My inspection ran out last month. I'm wondering if i can just wire the motor directly through the firewall and mount a switch on my dash. I know that sounds ghetto but oh well. I was thinking of a three stage switch. One for off, one for low speed, and one for high. My wippers only have two settings, low and high. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone done something like this?? Thanks!!!

I would personally just get the control repaired if it was my truck. I don't see why what you are doing would be illegal, I think all they say is that the wipers have to be functional. However, I think the control in the steering column communicates with the computer to tell it to turn the wipers on, it isn't just a "low" and "high" switch. I'm not sure what you are trying to do is really that simple. Maybe try a junkyard for a replacement control?

I don't see why it wouldn't be legal considering there are several other things that have different wiring and aux switches to run them. Then when you take the truck in for the inspection inform them where the switch is for the inspection. I would also do something to the old switch set up to hide it. It will look better and won't cause any confusion for anyone that does drive the truck.

Actually, I think your wipers only have one speed. The intermittent is controlled through the computer and the relays in the power dist. center (relay box) under the hood. Technically, if you can intercept the wiring going to the relays, you could essentially replace the switch setup in the multi stalk through a simple toggle. The difference would be no intermittent, unless you wire in some sort of variable switch.
This seems like a lot of trouble and work. I think I would seriously consider getting it fixed using the OEM setup before I start cutting and gutting the factory setup.

I had my wiper switch replaced not too long ago by the stealership, and it ran me about 85 bucks for the part and an hours worth of labour. Of course, it didn't fix the problem...

this may be a dumb answer, but if something happened, most likely it's just a fuse that blew...might be worth checking out before you tear you tear it down...

Scotty, Did you check the relays under the hood, I don't remeber which ones they are, but the box diagram should show that, at least check to see if you are getting power to them when they are turned on, then, there is also an end switch located on the end of the wiper motor. I've had problems with mine, and need to get it replaced, this sets up the timing on the wipers and "park" position indication back to the computer, the runners are made out of brass, or copper----a really cheap setup---, but one of these may be the problem. The relays can be had at autozone or a regular parts store, take yours in so they can be cross referenced, the relays in my power dist box are all the same, I would imagine yours are too. I'm guessing it may be the "end switch" on the wiper motor itself----but take the time to check for voltages--it may be a real simple fix.

Default Pretty sure

I'm pretty sure that its the wiring itself. When my wippers stopped working, a burning smell and a little bit of smoke was comming from my steering collum. So that is why i think its the wiring.

Sounds like the multi-function switch.
