lower gears
Im thinking about going with a set of 3.90 gears. I'm pretty sure my truck is running the 3.21's from the factory.
Ive never messed with differentials before, so I'm gonna get it done at a local shop.
Do any of you guys know about how much the install price should be?
The truck is 2WD

what year is your truck? And if you have the stock tire size I would go with 4:10 gears. I have a 2005 1500 and mine came stock with 3:92 gears. if you don't know what gears yours came with stock then look in the glove box or look on you axle for a plate and see if you can find it there.
If you still can't find it then you can request a build sheet from Chrysler at

They normally respond with everything within 24 hours
oefootball_70 has a 2wd with newer gears so maybe he will chime in and tell you what he paid for them with install??

Well to be safe I would say set aside 200-250$ for the gears and about 4-6 hours of labour at the local shop rate. Up here the dealer charges about 110$ an hour. But these are Canadian figures (labour that is)
do you plan on lifting the truck at all or putting bigger tires on it?
i would reccomend 4.10 or even 4.56 gears on it especially if you have the stock 20s. 3.21 gears must suck i thought the lowest rams had were the 3.55s gears (but ive been wrong before)... its not cheap to have them isntalled. but you do not want to do it on your ow. so save up and pay up. i try to get to know different shop owners around here and do favors so when its time for me to need there shop/labor i get great deals.

My truck is an '03 ST version. I bought it used and there was no owners manual to find a gear ratio.
Ive looked at the chart on 4 wheel parts and according to my tire height, speed and rpm's its showing the 3.21's. For example, at 65 mph (in overdrive), with 31 inch tires it will run at about 1500 rpm's.
I dont plan on putting bigger tires on it, its lowered with aftermarket 20's.
i just want something to help get off the line easier without running too high rpm's on the highway. Anything will be better than 3.21's lol. Especially with the weak 4.7 motor pushing it.
One more question though. Will i need to buy an installation kit along with the gears???
Thanks a lot for the replies guys

I dont think you have 3.21 gears. I think the lowest is 3.55. Look behind the rear driver tire to find a piece of white paper wrapped on the axle. It should tell you what you have. Your rpms may be off if your tires were smaller from the factory. And if you have an automatic, you need to add about 10% onto your rpms to account for slippage in the transmission. And yes you will need an installation kit. At least a minor kit.
