Default '08 1500 QC 4x4 Hemi - TRANNY PROBLEM

I searched, but didn't see anyone reporting a similar experience... so I'm posting to see if anyone is familiar with my experience.

I bought this truck about two months ago (posted about it here) and have already put about 1,800 miles on it. I've noticed a few times when starting cold in the morning that the tranny will take a few seconds to engage. But this morning when I put it in gear it sat there for about 10 seconds before it "thumped" and took off. Then when I pulled out on the highway I noticed that it seemed to be in a higher gear (sluggish takeoff while the motor was workin' hard). Then when I got up to highway speeds it wouldn't shift into higher gears. I was running 55-60mph at 2500-2700rpms and it wouldn't shift.

I'm scheduled to go back to the dealer first thing in the morning, but wanted to check here and see what you folks could tell me I might expect.

Other than this issue I am loving this truck.

Anybody?

Thanks,
Mark

Sounds normal to me. On cold days the trans will not use higher gears until at operating temp

I also believe that is normal because it happens to me from time to time.
If I let the truck warm up a little, it does not do it.

When it does happen, I don't give it any gas or anyhting. I just wait.

I have no idea's on your other problem. Never noticed it on mine.

No, this is not normal for any truck I've ever owned and is not normal behavior for this truck for the 1,800 miles I've driven it. It is not normal for the tranny to be unresponsive for 10 seconds when put in gear. It is not normal for the truck to start out in second gear. It is not normal for the truck to not shift out of (what I think is) third gear at 60+mph. I put it thru "tow/haul" and "O/D off" modes and no change in behavior.

Hopefully it will be something simple/easy to fix. I'm counting on the dealer service dept to diagnose and correct.

I agree. Though the trans will be sluggish and delayed in shifting when it is cold, it should NEVER sit there for ten seconds before it engages.

Have you checked the fluid level?

I agree, some of your symptoms are abnormal, but these trucks do have a delayed shifting default until they're warmed up. Knowing this, my experience in the mornings, the engine sounds like it's louder and seems like it is in a lower gear than first, but this is also because the torque converter doesn't fully lock up until it has reached operating temp. But if my truck "waited" to go into to gear for twenty seconds I would take it in to be checked out. It sounds to me as if your shifter linkage is out of adjustment, I actually got the shifter to stay in between the detents of N and R once and it did much the same thing your describing, when the shifter fell into R the trans "thumped" into gear. So I'm putting $5 on it being linkage but try also let the truck warm up for 5-10 minutes and then see what happens.

It is definitly not normal. I have a question for you. When you say it will sit there unresponsive for 10 seconds, what happens when you give it gas during those 10 seconds? Does it just sit there, move a little?

I'm fairly certain it is not a linkage issue. I don't touch the shift lever when this occurs and it picks up, finally, on it's own. The first time this happened I gave it some gas to go and it just revved but didn't move until a few seconds later when it "caught".

As big of an issue to me is that low and high (OD) gears do not appear to be functional at this point. That is not an operating temp issue. I know this because the truck was up to full operating temp this morning and still would not shift into either low or high gears.

I guess it could be an issue with the torque converter, but I'm not sure.

Yes, the fluid level appears to be fine.

I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow.

Took my truck to the dealer yesterday afternoon to let it sit overnight to try and recreate the same conditions where I've been experiencing problems. I figured I'd get a call today telling me they could find nothing wrong with it. Instead, the truck was stuck in first gear... After diagnostics they determined a solenoid pack in the tranny was malfunctioning. Luckily they have the parts in stock to do the repairs and said they should be all done with it by noon tomorrow.

Stinks that I'm having problems only 2,000 miles into this truck... but sure glad that it is under warranty.

Not normal at all...at least from what i've experienced with my truck. Sometimes mine will thump going into D but I never have to wait 10 seconds...and when cold I still get 4th but not 5th.

Try not putting it in gear until the rpms fall under 900...it takes less than a minute. How far away is the freeway when you first jump on it...mines about a mile away with a few lights inbetween and haven't had any probs.
