Go to car max and get a quote for a trade-in/sell on your ranger. You might be surprised on how much they offer...they tend to offer a lot for their cars and the quote is good for 30 days. If nothing else it'll give you something to compare trade-in offers to the dealer with the ram. Who knows maybe the offer will be high enough to where you can throw a few grand down and hand them the keys.

i'm with Silver. get about 300 miles out of 24 gallons, mixed driving. just remember to take that into consideration. you're cutting it close enough where that might be important.
personally, i think you're cutting it TOO close. if you're buying from someone you know, is it possible they might have another deal in a few months? by then you'd be able to save up the $3k for the down payment?
