Transmissions, Torque Converters and Rear Gearing - How to Improve RWHP
awesome thread, been looking at a TC for A WHILE, but frog wouldnt a deeper tranny pan with the cooling fins help out a lil? and im pretty sure my truck hits the stall when im towin an 11K trailer its like 22-2300 i think? but thats occasionally, so i guess ill be looking at a 2500-2600 TC with deep tranny pan, and ill prolly install an E-fan too....
Not sure if I can agree with that or not. I know for a fact my trans temps are down quite a bit from where they were stock, even sitting in traffic everyday (stop and go) the temps are still conciderably lower with the converter and 26 row cooler vs stock in that same situation and weather conditions but I also have not towed anything in stop and go traffic, the most I do is load up the trailer to help someone move or head up camping. When I helped this guy move, we loaded up the trailer on a Saturday and dropped it off the next morning so little to no traffic through the city for 30 mile drive.
You are probably right frog, but going off the numbers I have seen first hand Im just not to sure. The thing that makes me think that is not the case is that I would think that if I am sitting in traffic moving maybe a car length every 2-3min or so stuck in traffic that if the cooler did nothing in those cases then the temps would be almost identical in those situations with or without the larger trans cooler, but they are not.

cool beans, isnt there another determining factor in buyng a TC besides stall? i think its stall ratio? any one care to explain what different stall ratio's do? it would def be better off talking to an expert when buying a TC so you can decide together what would be best for your application, but just for understandings sake
I'm not really looking for a converter with a high stall. Just looking for one that is more efficient that the stock one. How much do you figure that would cost for the TC and installation? Btw what is the stall on the stock TC?
Stock stall I believe is 2300. A new TC will run right around $450 +/- depending on the company you go with, to get it put on the cheapest place I could find that would do it was $650, and that was at a performance shop, all the big name places for transmissions (like AAMCO) would not install a performance converter and most importantly would not install one that was purchased outside their store. What they wanted to do was basically modify the stock converter to up the stall, not the efficiency and they wanted $600 for the "upgraded" converter and another $800 to install it and the truck would have to be down for 3 days min. I ended up getting one of the guys around here put it in for me for around $300 with me helping out where I could (I do not work on transmissions).
i got mine (2600 stall) for $495 shipped. install will be free, as i am installing it myself. but i have access to a lift, and tranny jack, the whole 9 yards. I also picked up a Transgo Heavy Duty Reprogramming kit. Will install that too while i got the trans out.
Now with the reprogram kit, this will not really change the shift points in the trans as they are controlled by computer. but, the kit will make the shifts quicker and more firm. thus helping me out in the long run, and i feel that is worth the $70 for the kit.

Thats one thing I wish we would have done while we had the pan dropped, thought about a shift kit last second and made a few calls but couldn't find anyone local that would have them and were open.
A 2600 stall will be nice. Did you end up going with the street converter or race converter?
