Default Blown Head Gasket

first of all.

OUCH.

ive had my truck for three weeks (this really sucks.)

this is the estimate that i was given- does it sound about right? a lot of people i've talked to says its high, but the mechanic said it was because the 4.7 is a pain the ***.

10.2 hours of labor
new gaskets and bolts
sending the heads off to the machine shop
$125 misc- meaning oil, antifreeze, etc

= $1,405.00

and if the heads are cracked....
then they are 1500.00-1700.00 a piece.

That sounds about right. 10.2 hours is what alldata says for both head gaskets. You are going to want them sent to a machine shop to be checked over to make sure there is no damage to them. Make sure it comes with a good warranty.

That's about right for a dealership. Prolly can get it done for about 60-75% of that by a good private mechanic.
Just out of curiosity, did you have this truck looked over by a mechanic prior to purchase?

Seems to be getting more common around here on the 4.7L.

The trucks with 4.7's are starting to get into the 70k + range on miles, that seems to be where they crap out. I have fixed so many that I would never own something with a 4.7 in it. I have 2 waiting on me now that i cant get to yet, been too busey at work.

Glad I got a Hemi then.

Did you get the truck from a dealer? They may work with you on the repair. But if you signed the as-is papers, they don't really have to.

Yeah, it's funny, I've seen quite a few crap out under 100k miles in Ram's, but I personally know guys with the 4.7 in Grand Cherokees with over 200k on them and they are still going strong.

the 4.7 maybe to small for the larger size of the ram, my friends got well over 140,000 miles on his in a Dak, but its quit a bit smaller, just a thought
