Default Anybody else opt for replacing tires with identical set?

Never been a big fan of Goodyear's light truck tires - mainly because of the tread life I've gotten from them. I always thought my next set would be Michelins until the day came to purchase new ones. Over the few years I had the original tires, I had had a flat or two and gotten plugs, etc. but one night I flew into the airport to find my truck in the parking garage sitting on the rim on one wheel. I still had a little decent tread left and it was even all the way around but since I had yet another flat, I decided to go ahead and get a new set of tires. Then I thought about how good a ride I've always considered my RAM to have, especially over the Chevy's and Fords I've driven or ridden in. And, to my surprise, even though I'm not the best at monitoring and maintaining tire pressures or rotating on time, I still had 55k miles and counting on the tires. So, I called my tire guy and had him order the exact same tires for me. May be the first time in 27 years of vehicle ownership that I've done that.

I'm glad I did now because one of the tires has picked up a pretty nasty looking gash in the sidewall. It still rides and holds air just fine but I'm planning to just get it swapped with the spare and they'll all still match without having to go plunk down another 200+ bucks for a new tire.

well, they aren't great in any weather condition and they are basically car tires so for a truck.,...flat tires will be inevitable.
I def wouldn't drive on a slashed sidewall as there isn't much sidewall on the stock tires to begin with. They are very soft and have few plies.
As for replacing a tire with the spare...You still need to replace the spare now or else you'll have a gashed sidewall tire that isn't safe to drive on if you were to get a flat.
I dunno. maybe I just think too much?

I replaced all 4 of mine w/ Cooper Discover H/T's, they seem to ride just as smooth, just as quiet, and so far are lasting about 3x as long. Oh yeah, and they were almost half the price of the Goodyears. But, that's just my opinion.

The stock tires do NOTHING well. They last a long time but who cares when that's just an extended period of crap? They're downright dangerous in wet weather.

I wouldn't trust your spare either -- assuming your truck is over 4-5 years old it's too dryrotted to put into daily use.

Any of the tires in this test would have been excellent replacement choices. They're all-season, similar to the stock tires, but light years ahead in performance.

The stock tires wer the FIRST thing I got rid of and they had barely any wear on them. I could not live the lack of traction they had.

I bought my truck w/ 32k on it and the tires were comlpetely bald, I'm talking past the wear bars. I don't know how you guys are getting long life out of them.

I never expected long life out of them as soon as I saw the name brand on the side. Especially since the 20" stock wheels and that tire combination aren't exactly meant for heavy towing and I bought the truck not long after purchasing a 30 ft travel trailer that I'd be towing with it. I had Goodyears on my last Ram and they didn't last that long and I had them on my Jeep Wrangler before that and they didn't last that long either. I never even considered putting new GY's on either of those vehicles. I made up my mind not long after buying this truck that something else would be going in their place. Nevertheless, as I said, I got 55k out of the stock tires and still had some legal tread left when I took them off. And the flats I got were from nails that would have flattened any tire, not just these.

I have to say, guys, I've taken this truck with those tires in places and situations I don't care to go into again and have never been stuck or had any issues, including mud, deep sand, snow, and ice. I drove it down and back a muddy logging path to go duck hunting with no problems and had to come back and help my buddy get his F-250 Powerstroke out. He wasn't bogged down stuck but he couldn't get enough traction to keep the truck on the path and it kept wanting to try to go eat trees on the side of the path. I know there are better off-road or even all-terrain tires but most of my driving is on the pavement and I enjoy a very nice ride with these tires. I've driven my friend's F-250, my Dad's Silverado 1500HD gas, and my brother's F-150 and my RAM is by FAR the better ride of all those trucks. That's why I'm sticking with it and plan to get another one when I ever wear this one out. And if I can get another 50k or so out of these tires, I'll be happy as well.

^^^ The Cooper LTZ's i run do have a little stiffer ride, but personally...I like it as I can feel the road a bit more. On a scale of 1-10 where the stock tires are a 10 for plush ride..The LTZs would rate a 6/7. Maybe that will make you feel a little better about your purchase?
The only thing that matters here is that YOU are happy with your purchase. You drive your truck and nobody else.
This is where I reference the old saying...Opinions are like a**holes....everyone has them....whether it be tires or the type of vehicle to drive.

I must say. i like the way you handled yourself with everyone bashing your decision.
The stock tires are meant for highway driving. if you have a camper and travel often and you got lots of miles out of a previous tire, why look anywhere else? i wouldn't.

Congrats on the new tires. i'd say post up pics, but I think we all know what those bad boys look like...lol

Everyone has a right to disagree and I have to realize that when I asked for opinions, I may not like or agree with what I get - but I asked so I deal with it. I learned a long time ago that you can't please everyone and if you think everyone is always going to agree with you, you'll live life disappointed all of the time.

I would have liked to have had more options when it was time for tires but I live in a small town and really want to keep my business and get my service locally. Around here, it's Goodyear or Michelins for the most part with some BFG's thrown in here and there. I've owned 3 sets of the BFG All Terrain TA's (both of my 2 previous vehicles I put them on) and for an AT tire, it really rides good to me. But, true or not, my tire guy told me they don't make them to fit the stock 20" rims. My tire shop takes care of me all year long with the expectation that when I need tires, I'll buy from them. They will send someone to pick my wife's Jeep up at her work and change the oil and bring it back to her and things like that that really help me out. Between the labor cost and the gas to send a vehicle back and forth twice, and the oil change for $22.95, they can't be making any money on little things like that. But they get their money when I need new tires.
