Default 5w-20 vs 5w-30 debate

I have a 07' 3.7L, it calls for 5w-20, but a lot of websites out there say that weight is garbage for your engine life, what is everybody's opinion?

if it doesn't have variable valve timing, use what you want. The others need the thinner oil.

It protects the engine fine, and if it's what dodge specs then you should use it if you care about your warranty. If you want to get an oil analysis to check your engine wear you can get a free test kit from blackstone labs. Send a sample of your used oil to them and they will analyze it for $22.50, although I really don't think you need to.

I don't have any inside info on oil, but I look at it this way- why trust some random clowns on a website when dodge's engineers specifically spec'd out 5w20 as the proper lubricant for your motor?

3.7 was suffering from sludge build up like it's big brother the 4.7 was. They figured out the 5W-20 reduced the sludge, which was great since the MDS hemi needs it for the solenoids to work properly. In 2007 they recommended 5W-20 across the board. As of 2006 FSM still called for 5W-30 (as did the oil cap on the engine itself).

Variable valve timing? Might want to look further -- I don't think so. MDS yes, VVT, no.
