Quick update my friends:

Got the rockers/broken intake spring off using the rope method (that is just ingenious!) I just left the rope in for the valve stem test. I placed a rubber band around the top of the stem right at the keeper indentations, dropped the piston slowly without the valve seal so I could slide it fully. I am able to slowly move the valve stem up and down to the rubber band and turning slowly whilst doing this. It actually feels like it's gliding on ice.

Guys...I believe the valve stem is good! Thank You God! I honestly believe that the spring was broken so badly that it was not bringing the valve up far enough to seat when I was adding air to the cylinder...it's definitely
up higher than it was with the spring on.

Now, the fun part. Gonna get the new spring on, will be a task with the tight area it's in. and I guess it goes hand in hand, 1st my compressor takes a dump, then my air rachet, so...got me a nice new Ingersol-Rand beauty. After new spring is on, will apply air to the cylinder and make sure it's seated correctly.

Yeah! I "thought" I was almost there too! The spring tool I bought will not work with these springs due to the metal bucket. The tool operates with a handle to compress spring or removal of handle in tight spots and compress spring with bolt. The bolt is not long enough due to my having to place the tools jaws all the way at the bottom (See pic below) So, I tried it also with the handle and the bracket that contacts the spring is too wide, it barely sits on the edge of the spring and when it starts to compress, the spring pops out. I've tried it many times....so the option of getting a longer bolt won't work. Advance has one like supercharged shows in his pics with the star handle on top. That's my only option unless the guy who makes the custom tool can get one out overnighted to me tomorrow. Is he on this forum? I will try e-mailing him at that address that Al gave me. This seems to be the only hold up now. uuughhh

OR, if someone has the trust in me that has one of the custom made tools, let me know what your fee would be to rent it to me, take to FedEx, etc and overnight it to me for saturday delivery. I have a FedEx account that you could use. Just PM me. (Al, no offense, but don't want to pay FedEx from England)

I have an idea. I can call a welding shop and see if they can weld two small extensions onto the tools prongs as they are just too wide. Then I could just get a longer bolt to depress the spring with. One side touches just a hair of one side of the retainer in the spring and the other side is on the very edge of the spring....which slides off under pressure.

Top of tool as requested:

View of jaws and compression jaw....(where I could possibly get something welded on there to depress the spring correctly)

naw... try this ... get a couple of pieces of metal from home depot that will allow you to build a bracket around the pieces that are slipping off. you'd have to figure out which pieces to use but it may be worth a shot...

Steve, I like where you are going. How about a hose clamp around the fingers?

Actually, it's a pretty cool tool but just two wide at the fingers. I'm too tired to even think about how to rig it right now from your suggestions. I'm sure you know what I mean...ya know when mind feels like mush. I will sleep on it and try to think of something in the morning over coffee. Thanks guys. Maybe I should take a pic of the spring in it for you.

How the fingers lay on top of spring: The inner edge of fingers even look rounded.
