Default perforamnce air intakes worth the $$

I'm sure there are lots of opinions on this topic but I'll ask anyway. Right now my truck has a True Flow air tube and a K&N filter in the the factory airbox (came with the truck when I bought it)

Any good or bad things to say about them? Any real performance gains? Any brands to avoid or lean towards? Thanks.

Make your own CAI. Cheap and can be done in your driveway with the help of a K&N filter and some 3" pvc tubing. Works well. The metal stuff collects heat from the motor. Here's a few pics.

I might just replace the factory air box with a unit like from AFE using a conical air filter and keep the True Flow intake pipe.

Most on here prefer to build their own. I am very happy with my Vararam

Hemi under glass anyone? Very cool. What I have on my truck is an upgrade from stock. But, I dislike panel filters and factory airboxes.
Even the Ebay kits with K&N filter for $100 does not look too bad either.

I did my own as well after trying a couple of different ones. I personally do not think they are worth the money they charge for them. Truly the gains are prolly only maximum 5 hp, if that.....and for $300???

Here is my current setup....

The vararam is not cheap, but if you wait for them to be on sale, you can get them for under 300 new. I paid 290 shipped, so not to much difference from other cai. Yes it is more than a home made PVC cai, but I like it better and it is not nearly as loud as other cai.

You have the best set-up next to the Vararam. Removing the Hemi hat and installing the drop-in K&N makes just as much power as the open filter without the annoying moaning sound.I run the same set-up except mine has the Airaid pipe.
