Default Tranny filter

My 06 is due for the tranny filter and fluid change.I just called the dealer and they want 250 bucks to do it and he told me there was 2 filters in it.Just wondering if this is true and the cost of the filters.I be damned if im gonna pay them 250 to do it if the filters are reasonably priced.

For filters and fluid, 250 isnt a bad price. Yes there are 2 filters. one is a screw in like the oil filter, and one is a flat square one.

Yep, there are two filters. The traditional flat filter and a spin-on. If it has less than 60K, you can skip the spin-on, but it needs to be changed at 60K anyway. If it's close, go ahead and change both.

I paid $28 for a filter kit and pan gasket from Advance. Nine quarts of ATF+4 cost ~$30 (you won't need that many, but better to have and not need...) A seal puller (almost a necessity) will cost about $20 or so. A torque wrench (not necessary, but good for peace-of-mind) will cost about $50

If you can change engine oil, you can change transmission fluid. Be careful with the pan bolts - some folks have snapped a few. It's a messy job, but not difficult. Takes about three hours including letting the RTV set and cleaning the pan. Torque the pan bolts to 105 in/lbs in two stages: 85 in/lbs or so in a criss-cross pattern, then snug 'em up.

Have a beer or fifty on the $150 or so you saved.

Not sure, but I suspect only the 545 tranny has two filters and it was only put behind the Hemi.

There are two filters, that is true. Go to rock auto, they have the kit with both filters at a very inexpensive price.

Thanks guys for the info.I have done tranny filters on many vehicals in the past so this wont be a big deal. Was just curious if the dealer was trying to sell me something i didnt have. The truck has 35k miles on it now but i think i will do both filters anyways. For the cost ,from what i see,its not worth not doing the spin on with the other.

Thanks again for the quick replys and the info, theres no better place on the net for Ram info than right here.Keep up the good work.

BTW, make sure you get the right flat filter. There are two: one for the 4x2 and one for the 4x4.

FYI the 4wd trucks use a different longer neck on the pan filter, make sure you get the right one. SO you will need the spin on and the short neck one for 2wd or the spin on and the longer neck pan filter for the 4wd.

also make sure for the spin on filter that you take the old gasket out and align the spin on gasket CORRECTLY. if not shift issues will happen
