Default Proper enging temp??

So on my ride home from Central Michigan, I noticed that my engine oil temperature guage was reading right about 230*. I thought that the thermostat was a 210, right? Is my engine running too hot? Should I be worried?

Oh and my truck is a 2002 4.7 4wd with basically no mods. Thanks guys!

There are many things here to look at. What were the outside temps? Were you towing or hauling anything? How hard were you driving the truck? Where you in traffic or sitting somewhere idling for a while? When was the last time you did any cooling system maintenance and changed hoses, coolant, rad cap, t-stat, ECT?

Temp was approx 65-70, low to medium humidity. I was cruising the Freeway at about 65-75, depending on if I was passing or not. I was not towing or hauling anything, and the truck currently has almost 67,000 miles, and as far as my knowledge goes, no maintenance has been done to the cooling system.

I'm gonna guess that its runnin a little hot cause I need a coolant flush??

not necessarily.
could also be an oil factor as in thinner oil weight will heat up faster.

You do in fact mean coolant temp and NOT oil temp right...?

I thought the same thing. Your OIL temp is going to be higher than your COOLANT temp. By the sounds of it its pretty normal imo.

Have you checked the coolant level? And if no maintenance has been done to the cooling system and you have an 02, now is the time to do some serious work. Change the upper and lower rad hoses, the rad cap, flush the rad and block and refill with distilled water and proper coolant. Check your belt for its condition as well.

No, I did mean the oil temperature. My trucks factory temp gage seems to be in the norm, it was just the oil temp that was higher. I just wanted to make sure that it all was where it was supposed to be.

Weed - damn you're always here for us man! Haha. Come next paycheck I will swing to the store and pick that stuff up. I know my belt should be good, I replaced that when I was laid off for ****s and giggles.

So we agree that around 230 for the oil is about right then, yes?

Yeah 230 on an oil temp doesnt seem terribly high imo but i found that 250 is around the high side tho. I would take weeds advice and change a few things out. If your worried throw an oil cooler in. Also are you in need of an oil change? If your oils broken down it can heat up faster and lose lubricating properties.
