You shouldn't hear the fan on a cold start. There is no need for cooling on a cold engine. When the engine is cold, the fan should free-wheel, or nearly so. When it's hot, the fan should be difficult, if not impossible to move.

You could reach in with a rolled-up newspaper and try to stop the fan when it's cold. Sounds risky, but it should answer your question. I would think on an '08, the clutch would be fine, though.

Why not go ahead and change it out with an electric fan?

We have lots of threads on efans. There are a few you can use. I have a Taurus fan. Total cost and setup is less than $100
