Default Cruise and Overdrive Issue

Apologize if this has been asked before...I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Litre Hemi. When I first take off in the morning my cruise works fine and it will shift into overdrive without any issues. When I make it to the first stop light, my cruise will no longer work and the truck will not shift into overdrive. They maybe two separate issues as at first I noticed the overdrive was no working but have recently noticed the cruise does not work as well. The light for the cruise will not even come on, it is dead completely. Also, the trailer haul options and overdrive override on the dash does not work. I have tried to lift up on the brake pedal but that doesn't change anything. Any advice on what to try would be appreciated.

I have been working on car for several years so I do have some knowledge just have never ran across something like this. Seems like it shouldn't be anything major because it does work and then quits all of the sudden.

Have you checked for any codes? Pending, or otherwise?

The check engine light is on. The code is the crankshaft/camshaft position bank 1 code. You can clear it but it comes right back on. This thing is like on a timer it seems like, will run and shift fine but about two minutes down the road, cruise will shut off, and it will shift out of overdrive. Their is some reduced power but not much. Wait a few hours and it will work fine again for about 2 minutes.

I took it to a local transmission shop that I deal with and that was the only code they could pull. It does not have any transmission codes. I have replaced both external crank and cam sensors but that did not help it.

My dad is a retired mechanic and his scanner won't communicate with the vehicle. The transmission shop has a higher end scanner and that picked up the code but like I said clearing it did no good and they can't go further than that with the scanner they have. They recommended taking it to a Dodge dealership but the one here in town wants $200 just to look at it.

Perhaps a speed sensor is failing , I know it affects the cruise , unsure about overdrive,,since you did not list the actual code , I am only guessing it is P0016 crankshaft/camshaft position bank 1 code , which if sensors are good and not shorted somewhere , my guess would be in the timing , which I don't know if that would affect the cruise or overdrive or not , so what was the code ?

You only have one cam..... what else is on that five volt circuit? Since changing the sensors didn't help...... problem is likely elsewhere. Timing chain, or wiring issue.

I am aware I only have one cam. I was talking about multiple sensors (crank and cam), hence I used plural sensors.

Anyways, to finish this story, I took it to the Dodge dealership. Had a couple air bag recalls so they had to flash the PCM, and it no longer has any issues. Check engine light is off and shifts into overdrive and stays in overdrive. Also, the cruise works all the time now. They told me it needs a new PCM and the timing chain changed because it is 11 degrees stretched. They said the check engine light would come right back on because of the timing chain but it has not and not having shifting or cruise issues anymore.

I have put over 200 miles on it since it went to the dealership and no issues. If have issues again, I'll just order a new PCM.

Thanks for all the help.

If you need a new PCM you could get one for a good price on ebay, just match the numbers if you can...

Okay things have went down hill. The other night was driving home with truck (hadn't had issues since Dodge flashed PCM) and all the sudden it just died. Would not restart and sounded like it was out of time. So my dad and I replaced the timing chain and tensioner's (one tensioner was broke). We were hoping it just slipped time. Anyways got it all buttoned up and now the thing will not run at idle. Have to rev it to above 1500 rpm to even get the truck to clear out. As soon as you let off the accelerator it dies. Lightning bolt on the dash. Check engine light blinks, ran the code and it is misfire code P0300. Really at a loss now, Dodge said the truck needed a new PCM so wondering if we should start there or I have a bent valve or something to that nature. I wouldn't think it would clear out at any RPM if I had a bent valve.

Do a compression test. The 4.7 is an interference engine, so, if cam timing is off far enough, pistons and valves meet, and mayhem ensues.
