Default 06 ram 1500 4x4 troubles

Im having some problems with my 4x4 system i have the 246 transfer case which is the 4 auto system. Its never really worked for me it failed when I bought the truck used privately last year so i never bothered fixing it until I could afford to which was recently. I purchased the transfer case shift motor and the front axle actuator at first it worked like a dream slowly within 2 weeks they failed and both parts failed the exact same way the previous ones did which was the shift motor failing into 2wd but displaying 4x4 auto or 4x4 lock on the dash and the actuator failed locking the 2 front axle shafts together.

I currently have returned the parts and put the old ones on in a way that i have 2wd without the front axles shafts being attached. I realize there is a tsb out for the 4x4 system im not sure if my truck received it previously or not. Its almost as if something is shorting out? Im checking wiring when i can with my time off but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated thank you. On a side note these forums have helped me in the past with other problems and projects I’ve completed on my 2nd gen ram

Erm, do you have the CV shafts removed from the front? If so, that is a VERY BAD PLAN. The outer CV's, and that nut that gets torqued to a truly stupid value, is what hold the front wheel bearings together. Without 'em, you run the pretty much assured risk of one of your front tires abandoning the truck.

ohh no not at all all that i did was move the axle lock collar to the left shaft then put the failed part back on i did not remove cv shafts or anything of that extreme I tried to temporarily put it back together in a way that would cause the least damage

Cool.

This is one of the reasons I dislike the electronic shift transfer case..... Is it possible the controller is also part of the problem??

im with you on that i didn’t think it was all that great of an idea. Ive checked the switch it seems to operate the parts properly when i had replaced them. I could do an ohm test on the switch i suppose

Lotta territory to cover there...... looking for some nondescript little box.... Probably wouldn't hurt to pick up a service manual for your truck. You can usually find 'em in PDF format for 30 bucks or so..... With the newer vehicles, they are pretty much a requirement. And it's getting to the point that a computer engineering degree doesn't hurt either. Good scanner needed too... and they ain't exactly inexpensive.

I have a service manual for the truck its the Haynes manual that covers 1994-2008 so its pretty vague in my opinion I'm looking for one thats specific to the 06-08 or atleast with a good coverage of it. Computer engineering degree is being helped along by this truck lol and i have a scanner but its unable to read transmission or transfer case codes so im looking for one that is capable of that. Do you know of any that are a budget friendly?

You want a factory service manual. Haynes/Chiltons are useless on anything newer than about 1984.....
