Default Oil Change

Well, I am not much of a mechanic but there are a few simple things I can take care of to save a few bucks; changing my own oil is one of them.

Today I changed the oil on my 2006 Ram, with the Hemi MDS engine. I really want to say thanks to Dodge for giving me almost no useful information in the owner's manual about oil changes. They obviously want me to take the truck into the dealer.

Dodge got it right with my wife's Neon; oil changes are simple and clean. The Ram was not quite as clean, as you have to trip oil from the filter onto things, in particular a rubber boot which I did not want to get oily. This wasn't really all that hard to deal with; I just wrapped it with some grocery bags. The filter was a bitch to lossen, but I figure that it was torqued hard at the factory and the next one won't be so hard.

Anyway, my real gripe is the fact that the manual doesn't tell you how much oil to replace. The new engine capacity is 7 qts, so I was guessing 6.5 qts. So I refilled 6 quarts and then filled the empties with the old oil to see how far it would go. Looks like I drained about 6.25 quarts or so.

How much do you guys replace at a change?

GJ

you got to keep in mind that your oil filter absorbed .75 quarts and your engine probably burned a little too. if you drained all the old oil and replaced the oil filter you need 7 quarts.

What's a quart?
Is that basically the same thing as a Litre?

I drove a couple miles and then checked the oil level. It needs at least another quart, bringing it up to seven.

I would have been nice of Dodge to provide a little more information regarding oil changes.

I have 02 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7LTR V-8 and when conducting oil changes i have used 6qts of oil, with the change of the oil filter.
I guess with the Hemi engines you guys probably would use more.

Cool cool. I could have googled that, but I'm feeling a little lazy today.

I know I just changed my oil and it took 7 litres.

I've got a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 5.7L HEMI, I change my oil every 5000 miles with synthetic oil. Whenever I do, I add 7 quarts including the oil filter. I thought changing the oil on the Ram was very easy. I just slide under the truck (don't need to jack it up) cover the rubber boot with a rag and take off the oil filter. It is hard to take off the oil filter, I'll give you that. Let the truck sit after a long drive before changing the oil. The oil filter was burning my hands + the hot oil dripping down the side of the oil filter.

I've got an 06' 1500 QC Hemi 4x4 and I haven't hit 3k miles yet. But when I do, I'll change my oil, and to find out how many quarts I need, I'll just check my dip stick as I pour in the new oil, isn't that easy? As for the oil filter, I'm just gonna throw an oil pan underneath the truck, stick my hand in there and unscrew the filter, and let that crap spill out. Since I don't haul anything very often, and I don't race my truck or red line it a whole bunch, I don't need synthetic, I'm just going to use regular 1030w oil, wow.
