Default CAI really worth it?

OK, I'm looking at some of these CAI and K&N filter systems, then looked under the hood, man, I'm not SEEING a huge difference? I took off the stock filter entirely, closed the air box and didn't notice much if any difference going up and down a country road here a few times. The air intake is right up by the front wheel well, and thats where the aftermarket systems seem to draw their air from? Noticed a slight difference in sound from the engine compartment but that was about it.

I'm thinking of not messing with it unless I get that Turbine 3030 muffler installed.

I vote for stock.

Dodge puts a lot of money into designing motors.

I think you are right. What about drilling a large hole in the air box?

The Ram pickup air filter is even larger and less restrictive than the stock LX one compared in these tests:

http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php?t=14140

notice that the difference between intakes is about the same as the difference between the 3 dyno runs of each design of intake - that indicates they are all about the same and it is just 'noise' that makes the numbers go up and down

I think CAI's are worth it. I spent $60 on mine from ebay, and see an additional 2 mpg after installing it. It also adds some nice sound to the engine when accelerating, not to mention it gets rid of the clutter under the hood. Lastly, I'd rather spend the $60 for the system, and have a filter that I never have to replace, rather than buying a $15 to $20 paper filter every 6,000 miles or so (the price was just a guess).

I read through most of that thread and it appears most of these aftermarket claims are snake oil or the gains are very minimal. Now if you were drag racing etc...it would probably make a little more sense to get whatever advantage you can but for day to day use I'm not sure I see a real advantage other then the frequency in which you have to replace your filter.

You know if the stock boxes were so great then why does andding a CIA increase fuel mileage over the stock box and filter? I've been looking into these for along time now and when I do buy one I know I'll get some gains here and there with my hp and torque but Im mainly getting it for the fuel economy, anything that adds a few extra miles is a good buy for me!

Does it though? The aftermarket air filter guys CLAIM an increas in HP and fuel mileage but I've read more then a few pretty darn convincing studies which dispute these claims. IF you can pick up 2 MPG thats 52 miles per tankfull, if you averaged 17 MPG thats equal to about three gallons of gas, or about $9.00 at $3 per gallon. If you got these kinds of results then I'd agree that it is probably cost effective, I just think its so hard to tell with so many variables involved.

Here is my logic. IF these things improved gas mileage that much they would come that way from the factory because manufacturers are under SO much pressure to increase the mileage out of these vehicles by the government AND because it just makes good business sense, I can't see GM, Ford, Chevy etc. overlooking such a simple and inexpensive component. I mean, how much more would it cost Dodge to run a straight intake pipe with a filter on the end of it instead of what they have now? NOTHING, really, the cost difference would be so minimal it wouldn't even matter.

I dunno, guess I'm just a skeptic.

Some guy is selling mothballs and telling people it will save them on gas, total nonsense but he SWEARS it works and people are buying this stuff. FTC even came down and said the stuff doesn't work and will probably shut these guys down, just like all the Duralube, Slick50, Motor Up claims etc....mostly snake oil.

If it was so easy to pick up a few extra MPG why don't they come stock? Is Dodge stupid? I don't think so.

Automakers would pay a lot of money for extra MPG. What a great marketing point it would be if you could claim you got better stock mileage versus another automaker.

Nothing in life is free.

My SLT doesn't have foglights so Im thinking about plumbing a fresh air tube from the air box to the foglight hole kind of like a Ram air setup and putting in a k&n filter. I really want to put fog/driving lights behind my grille so I may not use the holes anyway.
