Default Check Engine Light MDS Related

Hello,I have an 06 Sport with the check engine light on. I'm out of warranty and went to AutoZone to have the code pulled. It is P3497....Cylinder Deactivation System (bank 2). Before I go drop my pants at the dealer, I was hoping someone had a clue on the source of the problem! Thanks in advance..this is a great forum site!

How are you out of the powertrain warranty with a 06?

I thought the '06 DCX cars/trucks had a 70K powertrain warranty or was this only the Jeep line?

You might want to give the dealer a ring with your VIN and ask if you have a 70K PTW or not, just a thought.

I've recently had the same problem w/ my 06 Ram. The first code I got (about 9 weeks ago) was P3400, Cylinder Deactivation System. Took it in and had it 'fixed' at Dodge dealership. They found it to be a bad solenoid in Bank 1. Also noticed the oil to be 'sludgy' and thought that might be causing the solenoid to go bad. So I opted to pay $150 for an engine oil flush. 8 weeks later, check engine light comes back on, P3497. This time they said the 2 solenoids in Bank 2 were bad. Had those replaced. And here's the real kicker - 3 (three) hours after leaving the dealership lot having it 'fixed', the check engine light is BACK ON!!! P3400 again! This time they said it was the 4th and final solenoid in Bank 3 that was bad. Luckily, I had purchased an ext. warranty after my 3-year factory warranty had expired. Otherwise I'd have well over $1000 into this one problem, when you add up all 3 dealership visits! Anyone with any other info on this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Idiots should have replaced them all while it was torn down. Why leave one old with 3 new.

I would spend $375 on a handheld tuner and just disable the dumb feature anyways. Your truck will shift sooo much better with MDS turned off. Then on top of all that, you'll get features from a tuner along with extensive transmission controls
Superchip and Diablo Predator are the only one's to turn off mds.

ok - forgive my ignorance here... I'm a newbie... had my 06 Quad cab now for almost 2 weeks. I bought from my sister as a lease turn in - so I am without warranty, and worry about the MDS failures... if I get a Superchip or Diablo - I can disable this and never have to worry about this right? And also benefit by tuning for either performance, gas mpg, or even towing modes with the tuner right?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome Fred.
This is correct. You can disable it with the Diablosport or SC. They cause few problems that I know of. Just use the recommended 5w20 engine oil and change it regularly.
I only run mine disabled because it sounds like crap with my louder exhaust. It can also be annoying on the highway with inclines as it will kick in and out. With a light foot, it does increase MPG a bit though.
The shifting and performance gains as well as the data logging and code scanning make a tuner well worth the money. I have towed over 7500lbs in the 93 octane tune in 95 degree weather with no issues.
