Official MPG 4th Gen Thread
i have a 2012 ram 1500 outdoorsman with the 20" wheels and i get about 17.5MPG highway. my truck only has 1000miles on it. When can i expect this number to go up? my understanding is that its harder on gas at first during the break in period and my gas mileage will improve eventually.
I've completed 173 tanks of gas.
Eighty-six (86) tanks recorded over 18.0 MPG.
Forty-three (43) tanks recorded over 19.0 MPG.
Eighteen (18) tanks were over 20.0 MPG.
Five (5) tanks were over 21.0 MPG. My highest recorded was 24.43 MPG.
Three tanks were under 12.0 MPG, all due to towing 9100 lb. tractor and trailer. In winter time my around town average falls to 16.8 MPG (very little highway mileage).
At 58,000+ miles, my current to-date total average is 17.83 MPG.

Dusty

I just dream of the mileage I see reported here. With 3.5 million miles under my belt and riding with/observing many other drivers, I think I can get better mileage from my style than 95 of 100. I consistently get 3-6 mpg better in same vehicle than their primary driver, but can't seem to do anything to get my own truck up where I want it. I constantly look for new ways to save as well. I once reported here that PRG-G seemed to be a boost when added, but I now doubt that. I just had the MOPAR tune up (34,500 miles), hoping for a boost....don't see it. I now idles rough. Is there a manual idle speed adjustment on this thing? It needs about 75 rpm to smooth it out. I run 87 octane now, since about 25,000; 89 before. Don't think I see much difference. I figure one needs about 1 MPG more to pay over 10 cents/gal. for 89 and it runs 15-50 cents/gal more in these parts. Suggestions welcome.

If the 3.55 is hurting you and 3.92 or 4.11 would help then the 3.21 is hurting you more! Think about it, 3.55 is approx. half way between 3.21 and 3.92.

And I know this is heresy to some, but of the handful of people I personnaly know that have gone to a aftermarket air filter system to improve mileage, none have been successful.
Good luck,

I doubt you would ever save enough money on gas to pay for the gear swap.
Ok, so I've been keeping up with my gas receipts pretty religiously, and I've wanted to put it all in a spreadsheet, which I have done. Here are the results:
Total Miles Driven 13019
Total Gallons 906.2
Average Price Per Gallon $3.40
Average MPG 14.4
Average Computer MPG 14.8
Maximum 18.5
Minimum 10.5
That blows goats.

Thats abt. the same mileage I'm getting,one time on a flat 200 mile stretch of interstate ,at 65 I got 20MPG,and I think I had a tailwind.most time 13 to 17 .
I recently made my first long road trip since buying the truck in the spring and got 24 mpg imperial on the highway. What that converts to in US I don't know but I'm happy as its about 5 mpg better than the 05 it replaced. I've never kept track of city mileage. FWIW the EVIC was pretty much dead on.

just bought my ram on friday july 13. 2010 1500 bighorn crew cab 4x4 with 5.7 with nitto terra grappler at's in 275/60/20's. driving from mobile,al to houston, tx the computer was saying 19.7. pencil and paper came up with 18.7. cruise was set on 75 for the majority of the trip. since sunday i have gotten 17.4( pencil and paper method) probably 70% highway driving. the truck this this on replaced was a 98 mazda 2wd b4000 xtra cab that got 18 on average. my previous dodge i owned was a '96 2500 2wd reg cab long bed with the 360. it got a giant 12 mpg.
012 RAM 1500 5.7. 3.55 gears. 9" tires. K&N ir box
After using the computer diplay i have learned to consistently get around 16 in town, lots of stop and go. Gas does seem to make quite a differance, funny thing is even where i buy it doesent seem to be consistant which works best. Which verifies what i said before, i have loaded 9000 gls at mobil and distributed some to 2-3 differant brand station. If the truck isnt a Mobil,EXXON, whatever owned truck, you wont know where the gas came from, most likely whoever is a few cents cheaper this month. hey, can't blame them, a nickle a gallon is several hundred dollars per tanker load of nothing but sheer profit.
Having said that, when my brother used it the first two-three times he got around 2 mpg less than i did.(he likes the sound of the K&N air box) i told him that had to stop and to do anything he could to keep the ceo on. His mileage immediately went to 16.something. he said boy that mileage indicater will really teach you how to drive. So yes, i agree with the poster that said driving style makes a differance.

I was trying to find a post of some one with a regular cab hemi either 4x4 or 2wd and i didnt see one. I either missed it or there are none. Does any one know what they get? I know in 07 they added the vvt i believe it is called, so does any one know what they got before and after 07. Also the new generation what is the mpg?
