And this is a bad thing? If the stock filter is not grabbing it guess where it is going

You have to clean the K&N, no big deal.

It is a bad thing, because the K&N not only clogs (due to the oil), but it lets more dirt into the engine (because the filter media is more porus). So even if you are cleaning it regularly to keep it from clogging, you are letting a lot of dirt into the motor.

I have researched these CAI's since 2003 when I put one on my Durango....oh the gas I wasted and well got my money back for the CAI but regardless, nothing but a cool sound when you pound on it thats it and then you get crappy gas mileage in any vehicle when you step on it a lot. All the Dyno's look the same, I am not a rocket scientist so all this paperwork and graphs and charts mean crap when I drove one first hand and know others that scrapped theirs way before me, I was stubborn I just knew that cool sound had to be doing something....the sound was my wallet getting sucked dry.
To each his own, maybe I might put one on this truck only cuz it is ugly under the hood all the black plastic needs a break. Maybe the Dodge one since I can get 10 percent off and I have a coupon for another 50 off accessories. I will have to drive calm and see what it is doing normaly cuz it is gonna get worse gas mileage because the cooler it sounds the more I am on it, but if it sucks gas driving normal then its gone. Maybe I will try one of those other deals, guy was lucky to fall into a test like that. Nothing good like that ever happens to me, but then I guess you have to live in the right place or be at the right show. I can't believe these companies would take the chance and borrow someones truck, what if they blow the motor....how many dynos the really pulling, like how many are good for your truck? I would think Dodge would just supply them a truck the more aftermarket stuff for sale the better off sales of the vehicles also. You can tell the car companies are putting stuff in vehicles that we are all changing, rear disc, boom boom stereos, tinted glass, big wheels, aftermarket goodies that don't affect warranty.

I am keeping my K&N drop in since I hate paying 11$ every oil change for a paper filter.

We have a lifetime warranty on our engines anyway. I am not worried. Where is the study of the % of engines that fail due to a K&N drop in? Give me that and maybe I will change my mind.

I forgot to mention the spark knock I started getting a month or so after the CAI was put on, I even put a cover to block the engine heat. The newer ones just look like the box but with no lid and a conical filter, the oem filter is huge, how much more air you really think you can get? I think Dodge already thought this part out hence the ugly pipes under the hood as far away from the motor as possible to, might as well the hood is up so high you could stack another hemi on top.

If the K&N clogs faster it is stopping more stuff. If you just clean it then it will not allow the crap through. It can not clog faster and stop less, does not add up, well unless you do not clean it.

I am not defending K&N in any way, just stating if it clogs faster it has to be stopping more.

you did say you were from canada right? (southpark movie song playing in background. "blame canada, blame canada".....)j/k

i assure you maybe, at the most 10 pulls. we are not talking a fuel proggramer that can be changed a 100 different ways. this is a bolt on. either it goes up or down on hp period.

72combo: im also with you on this. at first i wanted to get an intake. ive decided not to. i mean realisticly im not going to be racing guys on the street with my 3 ton pickup!lol. so i just popped in a k&n drop in filter. now personally i have yet to experience or hear of anyone messing up their motor because of a k&n drop in. i personally have a 12yr. old ranger 4cyl with 140k on it with a k&n with no problems whatsoever.......

I think you nailed it right on the head.
After 10 years of toying with race cars and trying things to get more out of it, I have learnt that you get gains in one area at the expense of the other areas.

it always boils down to basics.

Colder air will equal more HP but don't expect any gains in fuel economy. It will decrease. Free flowing intake , more air = more fuel needed.
Aluminum pipes absorb heat like a sponge.
Bigger filter that's not getting cold air from the wheel well or in front if the rads, will give you no gains and most likely degrade performance due to high underhood temperatures... you increase the size of the exhaust you will loose torque but gain HP.....

No matter what you do to it will cost you elsewhere.(besides the wallet)
It all depends on what you are looking for.

They clog faster because they are oiled. In a normal dry element filter, the dry dust will wind up ejecting when you hit a bump. I've been offroading for a long time, and you always see the kids buy the K&N junk and then remove it after the first dusty trailride.

K&N works just fine on a paved street where there isn;t a lot of dirt in the air, but if there is a lot of fine dust/dirt - some goes into the motor and some gets stuck on the oiled media.

From looking at the factory intake, it seems to be a good piece. It takes cold air from the wheel well, like stated above, and has plastic tubes to keep engine heat from warming the cold air. The filter also looks to be plenty adequate.
