JD here, the Guy who started this Thread. Signed the Papers today and took Delivery of the New Hemi 2011 1500. Replacing the 2011 I bought back in 12/15/2010. I got Dodge to buy it back under the Lemon Law. The New one is a different Truck. I am very satisfied so far. As it has only 87 miles on it. I will keep you all posted.
Remember the noise is in the Converter, verified by Dodge.

had that same symptom for months finally took it into service after the exhaust manifold bolts broke and I had a horrible exhaust leak. I mentioned the noise and the tranny fluid leaking at the bell housing. I also mentioned the tranny's occasional indecision as to which gear it wants to be in.
I will give you 3 guess' about which parts they have on order but you will only need one.
torque converter
tranny pump
front seal
I think there is a good chance they will need to overhaul the tranny.

btw the torque converter has been on order for over a week so they may be running out of defective new torque converters to replace the old defective torque converters with.

You never hear of ANYBODY having a bad TC in a 3rd Gen. Same tranny, same TC (or at least I would assume). I did used to do some part/time mainly weekend work for a performance shop that specialized in Mopar and although I mainly am a suspension/lift guy, I did pay a good bit of attention to the engine gurus.

As a rule of thumb, the stock TC was swapped out for an aftermarket (even if it was the same stall) after the mods got the engine up over about the 335-350 RWHP range. Now with a 3rd Gen, with 345 HP at the crank, it's only running about 260ish at the rear wheels stock, but the 4th Gens are starting life at 390 HP and assuming the same ratio of drivetrain loss, it would be about 300 HP at the rear wheels and wouldn't need much more than a tuner and a bolt on or two to reach that 335 mark.

I wonder if that's the issue here???

Default 2011 ram mystery noise

HI
New owner, new to this forum, I too have the mystery noise, first noticed it at 4000 klm still here at 16000 klm.Have had the rear diff. recall done as well as the "flash" ? to the trans program. The dealer tech has also looked for hard contact between the cab and powertrain, found an evaporator line contacting a screw however this only cured a small part of the noise. I have also spent a lot of time searching with no success so far.I found the oil pan to front diff has only 1/8 inch clearence but saw no sign of any contact.I wonder if the heat shield may amplify the noise? It has quite a ring to it if you tap it with a wrench.Hope someone solves it soon as I am heading back to the mountains soon and it drives you crazy on those long grades.

Default Same issue on non MDS models...

I am having this issue as well with my 2011 1500 ST 4.7L V8 (non-hemi) pickup. Light warbling sound when in 3-4 gear and around 1500 rpms under light acceleration. I don't believe my engine model has MDS so I don't think that is the root cause in my case. I tried tow mode and that helped but only by keeping the rpms out of the suspect range.

The dealer told me that was normal operating noise of the gears meshing together under load.

I am going to go back tomorrow and file a complaint. I know there is probably little they can do until Dodge comes up with an actual fix for the TQ unless parts start falling off or something...

I figure the more people complain, the more likely they are to own up. I just hope they don't end up with a Toyota scenario...

Angry mystery noise

I have been searching the Chrystler website for a customer service site so
I could notify them of my noise, all I find are cautions that they will not
respond to technical issues by mail or phone and they then refer me back
to my local dealer service Dept. The service manager has already said that I am the first to complain to them about this issue???? It is beginning to
apear that they have a runaround policy set up to discourage complaints.

I have opened a case with Chrysler for my instance. I will post my results (which I am expecting to be more of the same song and dance act).

(Edit)

I have read another forum where TQ replacements are fixing the issue from the dealer. I am hearing of a new TQ that is listed as a "STAR case" that has fixed the issue for several people. I wonder if they ran out of bad mexican made TQs in back stock?

...Hilarious. I recently traded in my 1998, mexican-made Ram 1500, the TC being one of the many things I had to replace during its lifetime.

Another new 2011 hemi owner with the same issue. 2 months and 2300 miles, shudders strongly when it kicks in and out of MDS. Also shudders with MDS off, at low RPMS/speeds and medium throttle loads. I'm taking it into the dealership tomorrow to get some more fixes done (my 6th time into the dealership since purchasing in June). I'll be sure to mention the TC, and I've also read about a TSB 18-023-11 transmission flash that changes the shift points and possibly eliminates (covers up) the issue.

Great thread, keep it going.
