piston slap
I think I know the Klunking/Knocking you are talking about. Mine has done it since new and I have about 20K on it now. It only does it until it gets warmed up. It is worse in the winter when it sits out. It is not a ticking noise, I have the same noise you do. It almost sounds likie a diesel, just not as loud right? As far as oil, mine has been dealer serviced since new, so whatever they put in it is what it has. I feel as long as it is under warranty, they will do the changes. $37 oil change is worth it to me.
The motor seems to have plenty of power and it don't smoke or do anything out of the ordinary, I'm thinking it's just a lifter not pumping up all the way..I think I'm going to change the lifters when I change my cam this spring..
I changed my oil from 5w-30 Wal-Mart-Synthetic to 5w-30 Valvaline..My tic went away and it seems to get better gas milage..It's a good thing..I'm thinking My Hemi didn't like synthetic oil I guess..
Dealer pump oil 5W20 every 3 months or 5000kms whichever is first, there have been oil changes with like 1200 kms but ya gotta do it. I dare any dealer to fight me if I have engine troubles. Now you guys doing your own...you got nothing to worry about as long as you log it and have receipts to prove you changed it. Now what if you decide to save money and buy a few cases of 5w20 cuz well its cheaper in the US and filters are on sale 12 for 25 bucks. How do you prove you used that on your vehicle.
5w-20 for 4.7 motors, 5w-30 for 5.7 Hemi's. Every 3000 miles is about right depending on how hard the vehicle is drove and type of oil used..
I didn't have 2500 miles on the Wal-Mart synthetic I just changed ..My motor was ticking , getting bad fuel mileage and the oil was Blackish dark brown and smelled burned..Some oils do break down easier than others, and can't get as hot without burning..

Ive owned two Hemi's so far and 3 are close to me. They do tick a BIT...
BUT On my 04 and my 09 the exhaust manifold bolts are CRAP!!! I repeat CRAP!!!
Ive had my replaced on both truck under warranty and its "ok" for about 2 months. Now I have been known to drive little harder than most and I'm a Trailer guy but cmon...
I'm not going back again for this repair So.. I'm going to wait till someone out there makes a QUALITY header (another bad design in this area) and installing ARP Stainless header studs.
But as for piston slap No.... they are WRONG but I will admit after a decade in this business Ive heard alot of exhaust leaks and the Hemi's manifold exhaust leak does sound like an internal engine problem, but its not.
As for anyone else with the problem I would suggest going to a pro shop and buying a quality ARP stud/bolt to match the factory style. Have the dealer confirm the problem and have them use your bolts. They should do it! All they have to do is order the mopar ones (bill warranty to your claim) but just use yours. Depending on your relationship(s) this could be done...Hey that gives me an idea for mine to LOL -- Good Luck --

In my '10, I use 5w20 Mobil 1. I have not heard the tick as of yet.....
5w20 is what is recommended in the owner's manual.
I ran nothing but Mobil 1 in my 2008 4.7 as well, and had 60K trouble-free miles.

Indeed, valvoline is the only engine oil I use.

I ran wesson oil in mine and had 145K trouble-free miles.
