2012 Dodge Ram HEMI, Brand New, 2,000miles, Engine Knock - UPDATE!
i would never add anything to the oil.all because reading about all these hemi ticks and knocks, i got 7 years warranty bumper to bumper and plus it has the factory drive train 5 year 100 000 miles.
truck had 2 miles when i got it. all are performed at dealer.
first oil change at 1000 miles.
second oil change at 3000 miles.
third oil change at 5000 miles,
and from now on every oil change will be done at 3000 miles with the factory recommendation 5-20 oil and mopar oil filter.
i get coupons from my dealer so and oil change costs me 27 bucks there.
that way if anything happens to truck they will have record of service.
my truck does not knocks, just has that small hemi tick and i have been asking, some of them say its from the empty catalyst converters and some say because of the aluminum parts of engine the sound travels and you can hear it.

The (newer hemi) drain plug is usually torqued @ 25ftlbs.
Faith & Trust.... not something you usually find in many dealership`s. (i only trust ME..!)
Why do you think they call them "STEALERSHIP`S"... they`ve EARNED that name for a good reason.
The dealers I worked at and there wasn't many over 30 years, oil always met the specs of what the manufacture called for. The oil reps came around and oils and gear oils was always discussed on new model years to cover the line. I was involved and asked numerous times what was needed. Yes there was a 'bulk' oil used but was of good quality. I fact best I can remember it was always Kendall products. The few dealers I have been in last few years all had several oils to cover their entire line up plus a bulk when possable. 3000 mile oil changes are a by gone era and not needed and hasn't been needed in many years. I've got my gas vehicles all on about 7500 mile services or 6 months on the Dodge 1500 and as long as a year on my vette and Marquis. Those TWO don't have a 'time' per se. Just a mileage stipulation. Both vehicles have warranty's and extended service contracts. The Dodge 1500 has that 6 month. It has the 'lifetime' My 3500 diesel 10,000 or yearly. But it has gone 3000 and 2.5 years once. I was bad ill and it didn't get used much. It was not a concern at the time. No warranty's left on it. I do use either Amsoil XL series or Mobil 1 but think I've phased out the Mobil on my gas. The diesel gets Amsoil 15w40 H.D. There are MANY oils out now that are as good as the Amsoil products that can be bought over the counter now. Some of you all post about some real shady service depts that I have never really encountered and only heard of a handful over the years. I've come across and heard of lots of shady SALES depts not so much the shops. There is a difference between incompetence and crooked.

Because the way most would likely see it, either option, or both options together, STILL add`s up to the customer being screwed in the a**.
So actually, ther is NO difference between the two.
Dont be scared to do things to your own truck in fear of it not being covered under warranty. First of all, they have to PROVE what you did or used, screwed it up. As for the dealer doing your oil change`s... i wouldnt put much faith into what oil they`re using... they are in it for PROFIT...! Now how good of quality oil do YOU think they are putting in YOUR vehicle. I`ve worked over 30+ years in many different dealerships over the years as a wrench/tech, alot of them use cheap bulk garbage oil. (some even use RE-CONDITIONED oil..!) Also, next time you go to your dealer for your oil change... ask the monkey AFTER doing the job, at what torque spec amount did he use when he put your drain plug back in.

I bought all my vehicles from the same dealer 2005 Ram 1500,Pacifica and now the 2012 Ram 1500,and let me tell you they threat me with respect there and I know almost everybody there and I always handshake with them.
Now until now they have been good to me,always trying to resolve the problems, always trying to help me, give me deals that others would never get,not charge me for something, even I just show up for oil change and they do it for me without an appt.problems is the people that worked into the work shop, they are some kids and not very experienced, and that's why when they pull the truck out I always check underneath and open hood and check.for now its good.as for the oil, on my 2005 I was mostly doing oil changes , because I plow with it during winter, I don't put miles, but I put engine hours, so I change the oil with penzoil and mopar filter on every 1000 miles ,maybe 1500 miles. Truck never went more than 3000 miles without oil change, and from that penzoil the 2005 that has the 4.7 l started having clicking noise on start up like a valve or lifter or something. It's there 20 sec and its gone.
The last oil change was at dealer and the valve clicking sound it's gone. Completely gone.its true that they use bulk oil, but I asked what kind of oil is that and they said ,mopar oil.not good answer. But I was surprised how the sound is gone.
Plus the price of the oil went so high that for 7 quarts and oil filter I will need 29 bucks at Walmart. Dealer does that for me for 27 bucks with coupon.
The problem are the kids inside the garage that think they know how to work on cars/trucks.
