Ticking sound when coasting?

RECOMMENDATION: If possible, try to find a driving area that is directly adjacent to a wall, such as the side of a building. This might be a little tough because you need to coast down from speed and have the engine pass through approximately 1600-1200 RPM. I found one area in a shopping plaza. You will definitely get a sound bounce off a wall.

I've got the same tick in MDS mode during coast down in my 2011 ram 1500 sport.
Love the truck.. LOVE it. But that ticking drives me freakin nuts. I almost exclusively throw 'er into 5th just so I don't have to hear it.
I've read this thread almost in its entirety (helpful stuff; a shame we're troubleshooting this on our own though as opposed to Dodge coming up with a fix or at the very least some sort of response).
One thing I don't think has been touched on though is cost. Before I begin replacing things on the truck in an attempt to fix things I figured I'd try and get a feel for pricing.
Anyone know what the rough costs are for either...
a) replacing timing chain and chain tensioner
b) replacing the cam phaser
Dusty, am I correct in assuming you'd try the cam phaser first?
I want to try and get as much info on here as my dealership isn't much help. I do not think they want to acquire any blame or assume any responsibility and so all I get back on this issue are things like "it's normal" and "all trucks have their quirks" or 'it's a great engine in a great truck and most people just learn to live with it."
I think I'm going to have to take the truck somewhere and say "call me crazy but just replace such and such part to see if this works" as no1 seems to want to really get their hands dirty and help out.
Thx guys...glad I found this thread.

Mike, my apologies for this very tardy response.
Here's what we have so far, I think. There are a number of individuals who've replaced timing chains, timing chain tensioners, tensioner springs, lifters, push rods, camshafts, and even a cylinder head with no success. The only two successful repairs for the MDS Coast Down ticking that I have found on the web included the Cam Phaser. I also know of one local Ram 1500 with the same problem that was only cured when the cam phaser was replaced.
I also seem to recall another comment from an independent auto service tech. that the cam phaser was a common cause of the same or similar condition on Ford motors. Knowing what I know, if I had my 2010 Ram back the cam phaser would be the first item I would have changed.
Depending on how many miles are on this motor and how long you intend to keep it, when your motor is opened up, checking the timing chain slack and the condition of the chain tensioners and springs would also be prudent.
Please keep us informed on your progress.

Dusty

same issue here!!
Hey guys, just joined this forum because I started searching to see if there were anyone with the same issue. The whole decelerating/coasting clicking sound and then shutting back off when 5ft from the stop. So from a lot of reading I've been doing I'm beginning to truely suspect the timing chain issue. It makes sense when the engine switches from 8 cyl to eco and back again. Timing chain gets loose over time when it drops to eco. I could be wrong. For everyone posting it seems to be going away when keeping it consistently on 8 cyl. My truck hit 82000 when my noise started. 60 to 80000 seems to be common with it from other people's posts. So in my research I switched gears to a charger forum. Here Chrysler issued a recall for timing chain failure, basically chain snapping and destroying the engines. The kicker is they recalled the hemis for the cars but not the trucks. Why? Researched all of these cars "symptoms" on the forum, and they are identical as everyone elses on here. Same conversations about switching it out of eco mode and the noise stopping. Wondering if the trucks just took longer to wear? Should Chrysler be recalling these engines in the the trucks? Let me know what you think? May just replace my chain and guide as a security for my mind.

New guy here with the same issues. Spent the past 2 days reading all 25 pages here and its crazy what you all have been through. I just bought a 2010 5.7 TRX4 with 49k miles on it and I noticed the sound a week after I bought it. I bought from a Honda dealer and its already out of factory warranty obviously so I'm on the hook for what ever fixes I try.
Is a Cam Phaser Limiter the same as a Cam Phaser?
I seem to remember that the timing chain recall on cars was for the chain or chain tensioners breaking, not for the MDS noise on coast down. While chain stretch may have some influence on the MDS problem, regardless, I think you'll find that those that actually resolved the issue had the Cam Phaser replaced.

Sorry. Don't know what a Cam Phaser Limiter is. If you purchase any parts there's only one item in a 5.7 Hemi that has a Cam Phaser in the name. Good Luck.

Purchased my truck a year ago with same issue
So this is my first post, have read this thread and I have he same exact noise. I purchase my 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 with 99k miles on it and here is my story:
Purchased the truck with a 90 day 3000 miles warranty. Couple weeks after getting the truck I noticed the noise. So took it into the dealer and the changed the tensioner, didn't solve the problem so I took it back to them, they said it was the clutch fan because it was broke but said after replacing it that it was not the problem and didn't know what it was. So I took it to the dodge dealer and they gave me a list of problems with the truck:
Power steering box needed replaced
Leaking water pump
Exhaust leak
Tranny lines leaking
Clutch fan broke
After doing an enigine tear down, they said the vvt valve screens broke and that caused the cam phaser to go bad.
I have had all of this fixed and I still have the same exact noise. I don't know what to do now but I believe it is something in the transmission. My truck is from Canada and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it as I have reads others in this thread say there truck is from Canada. When you take it out of drive and put it in gear it stop or if you push on the brake or gas it makes the noise. Please let me know if anyone has a solution.
Thanks
Jim
