For the last 10K or so I have been hearing a low moan/growl from *somewhere* under the truck and I now think I know what it was. Two days ago while on the freeway I got up to 80 or so and did hear one distinct bang/knock from the rear end. It was loud but brief. I slowed to about 70 and there were no more noises. I decided to have the rear end inspected while the dealer today. I think it was a good thing - My rear end is going to have to be completely rebuilt, the nut "showed signs of movement". They told me that about 1 in 20 they have inspected need rebuilt, this is more widespread than I suspected. My build was NOV 2008 (52K miles).

I have a 2010 Ram 1500. Love the truck. I received a recall notice for the rear pinion nut. Have not had a bit of trouble with the truck, nor have I heard any noise coming from the rear end. Took it to the dealer today in response to the recall notice. They said I need an entire rear end reconditioning. Is this unusual, considering I have never had any problems or heard any noises? I just don't want them fixing something that isn't broke. Concerned....... Thanks!!!

Might have found some metal bits in the fluid? Might be milking the warranty money.....

Frankdaddy2,

If you have any questions regarding the suggested repairs, I would recommend speaking with the Service Department to explain why they are advising to have this repair completed.

If you would like assistance reviewing this with your dealer or have any inquiries, please PM me your VIN# and the name of your servicing dealer. I'd be happy to help.

Thanks!!! The parts are in and I'm scheduled for the repair on Monday. I did some more reading on it and feel a little better about the process. I just hope I don't have future problems down the road (no pun intended), Thanks for the offer though.

Katie, I picked up the truck from the shop just a short time ago. Where I didn't have any noise before the reconditioning, I now have a hum when I let off the gas pedal and allow the truck to drift/coast, like coming to a stop. Is this something that will wear in over time, or did they not set the clearances correctly? I plan on taking a trip this weekend, but now I'm not sure if I want to take the truck beyond the city limits. Thanks!!!

Just got back from the dealer to have my recall taken care of. Unfortunately mine needs to be rebuilt. They said that it was only the 3rd one they have seen with the loose nut. Truck has 91K miles on it and I haven't noticed anything that would indicate a loose nut so it must not have been very loose. In any event they said that I was lucky I've got 3.21 gears since the 3.55's are hard to get right now and the parts should be here next week.

Went back to the dealer today and took the service manager for a ride. He said that the ring and pinion are probably off slightly after installing the new bearings and spacers. They want me to put 500 miles on it to see if they mesh on their own. If they don't, or if the noise gets louder before then, they'll schedule me back in to replace the ring and pinion gears. I'm a little leery about this, so I had them document it. They also said if the recall didn't cover the replacement gear, my drivetrain warranty would. I personally don't think the gears will mesh back, but as long as they back their word, I'll give it a try. Anyone ever heard of doing this? If so, will it work? Thanks!!!

I was in the same spot as you. Mine was their second. I'm having noise issues after the rebuild, so make sure they set the ring and pinion to spec.

They need to go back in and check the backlash and such just to verify rather than sending you out on the road for 500 miles. That's silly. If they won't do it, call customer care and open a case. There is the possibility that the tech has bad hearing, the ring/pinion set was milled off a little, etc. We don't know that yet. But, this IS a case where I believe you got blown off my a manager or a service writer.

About the training...Chrysler implimented requirements within the last couple years that insure that a trained tech of a certain level MUST be used for applicable warranty labr operations. Yes, there are ways around it, but it has become less of a hassle to do it the right way than fudge it with an untrained person. Whatever they would show you would be Latin to you anyway.

Contrary to the beliefs of a couple people that float around here (not you), stomping into a business and demanding things is not the way to handle an issue. They don't have much power over your situation, but they have enough influence to make this very frustrating if you go off half-cocked (not saying you would) and start insinuating things and throwing insults (not saying you will).

Any advice I give (and most people in the 4th Generation forum) is meant to make your life easier. With the help of our many great members, that is what ultimately sets this place apart from the rest. I will continue to put the keebosh on any posts that push people in trouble in a snowballing direction. If I have to delete someone's post....then I will, and have done.
