TNTech - out of curiosity - whay type of shimming is done on the carrier bearings in the 09 rear axle?

Adjusters like a 14 bolt
shims between carrier and bearings
shims between races and axle housing

On the 9 1/4, the threaded adjusters like the corporate axles have had for a while. There isn't a shim under the bearing.

At least that makes life easier. I was curious since Dodge was having the dealerships replace the R&P's rather than swapping reconditioned axle assemblies.

They tried that unit swap strategy back during the Grand Cherokee Dana 44 debacle in '99-'00 and learned from it apparently...lol. Just about every one I did (rebuild or unit) back then had to have .010"-.015" of each shim thickness reduced to make them setup right.

Yeah, I like the later model sleeves on the 9 1/4. They stay put now in the tube as opposed to the older ones that were held in by the caps.

TN is correct there is no shims for the carrier bearings. The 8 1/4 and 9 1/4 corporate axles have threaded adjuster to adjust the backlash, But the pinion gear does have a shim to adjust pinion depth. That why is important to look at the pinion gear to see if you have a -0 or +2 on the pinion gear. Then there is a scooter block that is used to check to see what shim is needed to set the pinion depth.

I just had the recall done last week on my 2010 Sport(3.92, LSD, 32K) and mine was one of the few that had to be rebuilt. New ring/pinion, bearings, seals, etc. When I got it back I had a horrible vibration at just shy of 60. I call the dealership and they had it towed.

Fast forward a couple days...I get a call from my service advisor explaining they were done with it and noted that the vibration was caused by a retainer spring related to pinion. The way she explained it was that the spring wasn't staying seated? My paperwork basically confirms what she said. Can anyone explain this a bit more and give their opinion as to whether this would cause any permanent damage given I drove it about 20 miles or so?

Thanks!

Probably talking about the S shaped spring that rides on the cross shaft of some LSD's and presses the spider gears into the side of the carrier.
