The PT cruiser was originally on the neon platform so it was taking some of the small car sales from the neon. The Pacifica should have been the PT Cruiser, it would have been more usefully sized and the visual impact of design would have been more dramatic. The Pacifica is pretty much like any other rolling blob of steal calling its self a cross-breed(I mean cross-over... lol).
The PT Cruiser was actually on the PT platform, whereas the Neon was on the PL platform. Oddly though the PT Cruiser is actually shorter then the Neon but weighs more...[sm=confused06.gif]

Kingelvis - Alot of people like the Caliber, and I am one of them. It's far from a truck. It depends on what state you live in, or your insurance company on what category it's listed. Some place it may list it as a truck, but they would have to be nuts to list it as such. Its no different than any other hatchback in history, but that's the problem; you people are pissed that the damn Neon was replaced by a hatchback. Oh, and heaven forbid that the Caliber SRT-4 has a fewseconds less hp; than the damnNeon. To me; the fuss you people make about this car is pretty petty. Just because they finally quit making that ugly Neon. I thinkthe Caliber ispretty stylish, and theCRD tranny is awesome.
I dont think anyone is saying the Neon was fine as is, because it was certainly ready for a total redesign for a 3rd generation. However, they decided to replace a sport compact with a heavier, taller, wider, and slower hatchback that isnt competitive against the other sport compact, especially in the area of performance..

I think the solution to the Neon problem is what Honda did. The Civic has gotten big, so what did they do? they released the Fit, a small car that is around the size the Civic used to be.

So Chrysler can release another Sedan/coupe in the Compact segment, call it a Neon, and call it a day.

Well , just a thought. I have not seen or heard a comercial for the dakota or durango in months so I would bet one or both of those will be killed off. I also think if design boys get away from the "big rig" style with the ram in '09 it will be the last nail in the coffin for the pentastar pride

Good for you, but its still not a good replacement for a neon. Point that your not getting is if you pull a named car/platform that is selling well(better than several other Chrysler plats) from the market and dont replace it with a like vehicle and instead put the Caliber in its place well your going to have alot of dissappointed consumers that will just switch brands altogether... and this is the one thing that will kill off Chrysler the quickest. When the consumer turns the other cheek to get what they desire because its no longer available from a manufacturer you end up with less sales, less sales equals another buyout or a sell-out which is what seems to be at this point inevitable for Chrysler. With the rumors of selling MOPAR and knowing that for the time being Chrysler is worth more apart than together. GM still wants Jeep bad and if they get their sh*t together they may be able to put up a large enough bid for it that it gets sold off. Its all about money now...

And basically if I want a compact performance car I either have to go the foriegn route or buy a Cobalt. WTF is this world coming too.

The thing is that you dont understand is there are more to buying a car then PERFORMANCE. There are people out there who dont really care that much about performance. The SXT and R/T are selling like HOTCAKES. Our local Dodge Dealer can't keep a Caliber on the lot, because when they get them; they sell so fast. That's more than I can say about the plain jane NEON!

That may be true for your dealer. But the reality is we are looking at cutting a shift at belvedere due to lack of sales of all three them. Caliber, patriot, and compass.

The durango is not getting killed, but will be replaced in 09-10. It will sharea new unibody chassis with the grand cherokee.

From my understanding the dakota will goto a build to order basis. This should start in the 09 model year.

For the neon/caliber argument. They both blow. The caliber feels cheaper than the neon did. Plus that cvt is piece of crap. Its always "hunting " for a gear. Plus its reaction time on downshifts is awful. Why is it a 2.4 with a 4 speed auto in a sebring gets better gas mileage than a 2.0 cvt?

It seems to me that the people they (big 3) hire to make these decisions are not in touch with the market. Yes they do have some great stuff out there, but to me they seem to be stagnating when they used to be inovating. We don't want trucks that ride like cars. We want trucks that ARE trucks. Real trucks ride better when they are loaded, not worse. We want solid axels. We want to be able to service our own U-joints with a grease gun. It seems they think they know better than us, what we want, but that is simply not the case. If it was , there would not be so many modified vehicles around.
