No Viper for 2007!
Has there been an official press release about this yet, or just what was posted at AllPar??
Corvette took a one year hiatus in the 83-84 model year. The C4 was a huge improvement over the C3 (although, I do like the "coke bottle" lines of the C3).

Hey! First of all, from the concept car photos of the Firepower here:
http://allpar.com/cars/concepts/firepower.html
I would never describe the Firepower as cheesy!
Secondly, the viper looks totally different both inside and out:
http://www.allpar.com/cars/viper/coupe.html
The Firepower is not to compete with the Viper. The Firepower is a more luxurious, exotic looking car for more indulgent people that prefer comfort and class to a raw racing car. The Viper, on the other hand, is generally tuned for power and racing, with a rather bland interior and harsher ride due to its aforementioned intentions.
Also, Devil's Reject, although the Firepower and Crossfire do look a little similar, the Crossfire has a different overall shape than the Firepower. Of course, they do have a "Chrysler" look, as all Chryslers do, but again, the shapes are way different.
http://www.allpar.com/cars/chrysler/crossfire.html
These photos will show what I mean...the interiors are also completely different from eachother.
Is it just me, or does the Daimler Chrysler Corperation not OWN the Dodge Corporation? So, saying that the Firepower should be sold under the Dodge name is like saying that the XLR should be sold under the Chevrolet name. Chrysler is to Dodge as Cadillac is to Chevrolet. The Firepower is a more posh car, just like a Cadillac in the Chev family, so it's sold under Chrysler. The Dodge vehicles are targeted more towards the youthful buyers wanting raw power, whereas the Chrysler vehicles are targeted toward the ritzy buyers wanting lavish comforts with their performance (and willing to pay the extra money for it).
If you're looking for a car under 35k...well, you're gonna get what you pay for. You can't expect a luxurious, high-output vehicle for cheap. All that wood grain and leather, not to mention the extra performance parts, do add a lot to the price. You speak of Dodge having to compete with the Chrysler Crossfire...as I explained earlier, Dodge and Chrysler are the same company. They don't intend to compete with eachother.
The Firepower may be in the same performance category as the Z06 and the Shelby Coupe, but it's not in the same comfort category.
Here's the interior shots of the Z06:
http://fast-autos.net/chevrolet/c6z0615.html
compare it to the Firepower:
http://allpar.com/cars/concepts/firepower.html
I know I can spot the posher car!
As for the Shelby (I think you mean the Ford Shelby GR1):
http://www.supercars.net/cars/3077.html
the interior shot is small, but you can still tell the inside isn't much to boast about.
Devil's Reject, you may not have, or want to spend, 100k on a car, but the Firepower is designed for those people that do.

the Firepower is supposed to be in the $50,000 range, where the Viper was originally back in 1992... and with sagging Viper sales, its good for Chrysler to use some of the parts and pieces from the Vipers so they dont just scrap the whole production line after dumping tons of money into it. It doesnt really matter under which name they badge it. After all Dodge sells more trucks than anything and there arent any Chrysler trucks. It has to even out some way.
One thing here is that Cadillac has nothing to do with Chevy.... Cadillac is a GM product....as well as Chevrolet....
DCX owns Chrysler/Dodge.... The difference here is that even with the Cadillac/Chevy scenario.....both companies have 2dr coupes with V8 power that are high performance, but they still both have cars that suit the tastes of both ends....
DCX on the other hand, has eliminated every good quality 2dr coupe they've had, and then expect us to buy these 4dr's or crappy SUV like cars...... and it's a sham....
The Firepower IS in fact a Viper based car. Like HemiMan4451 stated, it was merely a V8 powered version.....which is cool and all....but still misses the point that Dodge needs a RWD V8 coupe more.....
The Firepower from all that I could find is being priced in the z06 range of around $55-65k. So while it's not that expensive as compared to the Viper, it's still going to be expensive.
Dodge does sell more trucks then anything....and thats okay.....what I am getting at here is that DCX has no low end priced V8 performance cars......and several of the other manufacturers either have $26-35K V8 performance cars, or they have super/turbo charged V6 cars for around $28k. Where's DCX? The cheapest performance 2dr coupe you can purchase from DCX....is the Crossfire......but its ridiculously small.....and the price is too steep for it's weak base 3.2L V6.
The Crossfire/FirePower share more then just a Chrysler look....both have long front ends and literally no rear end....and as it stands right now.....the Firepower is still a concept....which means it will most likely be changed if/when it actually hits production....
There are at least 2 dozen luxurious style cars available for under $40k.....and that's what I'm getting at here.... you do not need to have some overpriced vehicle.... Now, not all of us view woodgrain and leather as being luxurious....but even with leather....there are still several cars that would fit that bill. If I wanted to spend 60K on a car, why not just buy a Mercedes?
The Firepower is exactly what's wrong with DCX....as they are not paying attention to their market....
Sorry for the long rant

That's all fine and dandy, but: concept car=/=production car
I will give Chrysler credit, their concept cars are usually lightly veiled production cars, but if ALL that wood and chrome carry over to production, I will be surprised.

Actually it looks like the firepower will compete w/ juguar/aston martin ...550 marinello ferrari...new lambo muira .....new xk jags....new ford Iosis...........maserati...bmw m3s....and so-on...If I had 50000 to drop that would be what id go for. I wish vipers still went for 50000 1993*(sigh)
