Common Dodge Neon Repairs and Problems
hello. i'm brand new to this forum and am seeking some help if possible.
bought a 2004 neon in november. drove fine for a little while then began the starting problems. wont start every once in a while, basically whenever it feels like it, no real pattern. turn the key, no clicking, no cranking, dash lights/ ac/ radio/ headlights all work.
needless to say, there have been shops consulted, parts replaced (starter, alternator, starter relay, fuses, ignition switch and actuator pin).
the starting system including battery has been checked and tested multiple times by auto zone and a local shop or two. was told it could be a bad part such as the new starter we put in being shoddy. at an oil change once it wouldnt start and the tech wailed on the starter from underneath with a hammer and it started.
jumping the battery when the car gets stuck doesnt help.
it never stalls once its running though the idle can be a little wonky at times.
other odd electrical things have been noted, like if the air is on and i press the window button the ac will audibly lose power.
has anyone had issues like this with their neon, and if so did you find a solution? its been like six months now and i would just like a reliable car....
thanks.

Hi, I have 2003 and a 2005 Model neon all which are compattable in parts and repair. I have had well I should say,DID have this problem and took many repairs such as your to figure it out. First question though.....are you blowing the #10 fuse in your fuse box inside the car? Also, have you ever had your car go into Limp Mode for no real reason? Limp mode is when the car wont go out of first gear. If your not blowing out any fuses than you aren't grounding out as severely as I was YET. The wiring harness's that go into your computer PCM are crap. Atleast my run in with these neons they are. The wires sometimes fray and intermittently short or disconnect, not making full contact. In my case I live in a rural area with tough roads and over time the wires that go into one of the plugs that attach to the computer were coming loose and shorting. When your car wont start at all, there is no contact at all to the pins that connect to the PCM, thus NOTHING. Try this, the PCM is a square box on the driver side below your battery under the air intake. This box has 3 lines of seperate wiring plugs that plug into the computer. Make sure you check to make sure they are all on tight and not lose. Second, push the wires that come out from the plug into the plug making sure no wires could be coming out. They are most likely taped so just grab'em and push them in. This is where I found the problem. The computer controls everything electrical in your car so the fact your having other electrical issues don't surprise me. I was getting random check engine light codes as well. Also, in my other neon I was having same electrical issues except this time it was in the wiring under the car near the frame. A mechanic shop put my car on the lift and squashed the harness breaking some wires. They would short out intermittently until eventually I was grounded until I got it fixed. This can also happen if you run something over a snap something to the harness that jerked it out from the PCM or corroded your wires. I have to admit though it took over a month to trace all the wires down and figure exactly what was wrong. i say, next time this happens go out and reach your hand and push in the wires like I said and check they are on. If the car starts right up....you know where the problem is. Your losing connection to the pins. If your drive on rough terrain or had hard bumping or an accident. I bet thats what it is. Hope this helps.
I bought an 04 SRT-4 two days ago, and it has been running great. Today I was running it harder and longer than usual and on my way home I had a CEL come on. I ran the code on my DSP and it came back as a Cylinder 3 Misfire (Engine Code: P0303). I have read a few cases on different forums of misfires being caused by bad plugs, coil packs, injectors, intake mani gasket, and a few other things. Being that I just got the car I don't have a lot of extra money to stick in it right away so I'm hoping for an easy fix. A couple things I noticed going down my road were at idle sounding like it skipped a beat (the misfire I'm sure), and when I boosted on the deceleration I heard a fluttering noise (Boost Leak?). I am running normal boost levels (16-18 PSI) but when boosting at higher speeds it begins to cut out or flutter during acceleration. Any input would be appreciated. I'm new to these cars, and don't know where to start as far as looking for the cause of the misfire and testing for a boost leak, if anybody could list the steps or give me an idea of where to start looking that would be great. Hope it's an easy fix.
Mods: DSP, CAI, BOV w/ Spacer, 3" Exhaust, (more to come across, previous owner didn't know the car well.)

Would hate to be the simpleton here but when my 2005 was skipping in 3rd gear, I changed out the plugs are wires and I was good to go. Seems to be your easiest repair to start and easy to do yourself. Check your plugs for spark with a screwdriver. You can tell if their bad this way. Then only replace the plug you have to.
I have a 1995 dodge neon and it cut off on me twice while driving. I had to pop the clutch to start it, turning key would not work. I took it to shop and they said only thing they could find was loose grounds. After they tightened them it ran fine for few weeks, now its cut off on me two more times. Once when i was stopped and hit the defrost button because window was fogged. And second time when i just stopped at stop sign. All times my lights were on. So can someone help me so i dont have to spend alot of money for ppl to check it. Also after i started it back battery light was on and when i got somewhere and cut car off all together and cut back on with key it was off. Please help

I have searched and found nothing like this, so I would welcome suggestions. My 2002 Neon A/C works great for about an hour, then the airflow slows to a trickle. There might have been a hint of an electrical smell when this happened. If I switch to vent for a couple of minutes, the flow usually comes back for another 30 minutes or so. I have replaced the blower motor and the resistor pack. Ideas?
