ok, it's only when your working with aircraft does it get funny[:'(]
Drew,
This comment confused me a little. Are you just implying that aircraft have less tolerance to a minor variance than autos? Just wondering.

tollerances get MUCH tighter. . .instead of useingft-lb wrenches they use in-lb. we test to 4% accuracy for standard non-aviation wrenches, however aviation wrenches are tested to 2%. the standard we use is acurate to about .005 inch-ounces

and not only that, every screw, nut, and bolt has a torque spec on it for aircraft. Even though a torque spec is listed for our trucks I normaly just use German torque standards, goodentite

I just did my truck and man was it off. The exhaust valves were worse than the intakes. It is much quieter now.

Glad to here you went for it Bob... how was it for you? One question I dont recall seeing an answer to is if you do the adjustment hot or cold...?

Cold. It'sin the first post
The manual says under 100 degress. The reason is that the valves and pushrods expand more than the block when it gets hot and the gap will actually close up.

Did you take any pics Bob? I'm curious to see the difference inside in pics between Dave's 3rd gen and your 2nd gen.

Are the gaps the same?

yup, sorry I missed it. when adjusting the rollers on my 2000 5.9 they wanted it done hot. sucks... many little burn scars on the fingers [:@]

Bob, did you re-use the valve cover gasket? I'd assume you could as long as it's not damaged...

if I'm not mistaken. . .all 5.9's from all generations are lashed at .010" intake and .020" exhaust.

Just a quick question. Do you turn the engine as you are looking at it clockwise or counter, or does it even make a differance?? I was thinking I read somewhere that you can turn it counter by the alternator pulley?? Thanks.
