Default RE: Valve adjustment DIY

I did mine cold. the truck sat in the garage for 2 days and did not get started. The reason being...I started to do the job and my 14mm and 9 /16th box wrenches both have grown legs and walked off! [:@] I got the valve cover off and the engine in TDC. So I had to go to Sears and buy 2 more wrenches. When I got back I did not feel like finishing the job so I drove the gasser and put it off till the next day.

I used the same tolerance as the DIY, it was .010 on in take and .020 on exhaust. Only one valve was in tolerance out of all of them. I think #4 intake. The valve cover gasket is rubber coated metal and about 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick. Unless you are a dumb@$$ and tear it up, it can be reused over and over. The only thing that was a pain was #6 you've got to lay on top of the engine and reach back under there and adjust the valve. Better get a regular allen wrench too, because you won't be using a "T-handle" allen wrench on #5 or #6 unless you've got one that is about 2 inches long.

This was still easier than the old VW air cooled days where you had to crawl up under the engine and do it from underneath.

Hey Mayfair, I think you bought a dork wrench instead of a torque wrench.[sm=happybounce.gif]

Couple things for anyone following this on an '06:

1) Remove the breather hoses from the side of the black cover, not underneath
2) Beacuse there is no cover underneath! 6 bolts on the black cover (the 4 shown in the earlier pics and 2 WAAY in the back) and you're there
3) Exhaust clearance is .026 according to my sticker

Everything else appeared to be the same as posted. I'd have taken pictures, but didn't bother to find the camera assuming it would be exactly the same. Pretty easy job actually, well, except for reaching #6

I plan on doing this when I do the studs either this weekend or next. Good write up, should make the job a breeze.

If you think of it, take some pics of these "bridges" that Jake is talking about, or anything else that may be different between your year and this one.

Mayfair, the bridges look the same, infact everything under the valve cover looks the same except the injectors.

'Tis been many moons, I'm sure, since the valves have been done on my truck. This is definitely on my to-do list.

What are the signs of them being out of spec? Just extra noise, or are there performance/mileage issues also?

I don't meant to promote other forums (I'm not a member anywhere but here at this point), but I did come across the following which had some good info to complement all the photos and instructions above:
