Default lift pump

what is the cheapest upgrade on a lift pump? i just purchased an 01 2500. upon review of the service records, i found the lift pump failed twice and shelled the injection pump with it. i am scared. can i just install any frame mounted generic electric pump? purchase of the truck has sucked my account dry. any suggestions are apreciated.

Any pump that will produce enough PSI (10-15)will work. The Walbro and FASS units seem to be the most popular, but will cost a few $$$ more. But, when you have a $2000 injector pump on the line, the extra $$$$ is worth it.

Is the walbro installed in series with the factory lift pump?

No, you bypass the factory lift pump.

Would you condemn the factory lift pump, or use them together? Would you install a hobbs low pressure switch or the like to switch pumps in the event of low fuel pressure?

The stock lift pumps are junk, aren't even worth dealing with. I would just run the aftermarket one and put a fuel gauge in (or atleast a low pressure light)

So the long and short of all this would be remove the in-tank pump, install an in-line walbro and a lowfuel pressuregauge and buzzer. Do we know the micron of the factory/fleetguard fuel filter and is it considered sufficiant if it's maintained as it should be?

Bottom line is: If the truck starts bucking like hell and you suspect the transfer pump just went out, STOP IMMEDIATELY and shut it down or you will trash your injector pump. My bill was $4500 at the dealer. A tow truck ride to the shop is much cheaper.
