Engine choking out at throttle up...
entered the on ramp to the freeway. throttled up for our speeds (75) and the engine choked and about died. the dash lit up, has heavy hessitation. I pulled off to the side and dropped it in neutral and it recovered fine. idle in neutral is great !
babied it onto the freeway (20 miles from home [:@]) made the first 10 miles with no real problems. decided to throttel up and check the engine. it started to choke again while I was entering the blazing fast lane!!
I moved it over 6 lanes to the slow *** lane. babied it home at 65. even on surface streets , taking of from a stop light , the engine chocked unless I pulled my foot OUT OF the accelerator.
just chainged oil and filter, and fuel filter saturday. drove sat and sunday with no problems
any ideas?
I will check for codes shortly..
note: I did just top off with fuel this morning. I decided to try the 2stroke oil. I also added PS when the tank was only 1/3 down. maybe too much PS since I had not burned the last batch of it???
decided to try the full throttle test like at emissions (hammer throttle down for 10 second bursts) . the engine revs up fine and holds rpm. no choking, no temper.
I am waiting to call my guy at Dodge...I have his cell #
thanks !!!

RE: Engine choking out at throttle up...
I have codes
12 -none
13-no change in map
14-map volt too low or high (gee, when the engine chokes, volts surge..)
15-no vehicle speed sensor signal (ok engine dies, no power)
for what I can tell watching the engine light flash..
the explinations are according to the chiltons. I would guess that the basic codes would reflect on the diesel as well as the gasser...
just pulled the air filter and intake line from the turbo. filter looks new
sprayed out the filter housing and plenum with brake parts cleaner (with it all disassembled).
checked fuel filter for snug fit, its ok. (checked oil filter also.) no fuel leaks from any where that I can see.
I wonder if the fi pump is chokin out..its only 6 months old.. if that...

RE: Engine choking out at throttle up...
Dave was mobile, not in office. no books in truck.
I just removed my turbo/ intercooler flex boots.
found a nicecrack/ gougein the 1st boot from the turbo housing.
a bit of oil in the intercooler plenum from the turbo.
called Dodge here, they list the boots but they are not stocked any where (in the country) at Dodge.
just called a diesel mechanic 2 miles away. he suggested I get hvy dty rad hose from napa to replace the boots. I could also pay high $$ for silicone *****..er umm.. I mean boots at a performance shop.
Dave gave me this list (off the top of his head while driving)
turbo plenum / intercooler boots may be cracked
lift pump (may have internal filter)
fuel sender in fuel tank (may have filter)
bad rubber fuel line
now I am hearing from this other mechanic that the turbo may be crappin out since I found some oil in the plenum. it spins up real nicely. I can hear it whistle
he likes to go for the "throat" when ya take your truck to him
Im gonna redneck the scored boot I found with some duct tape
if it closes the hole enough, then that may be the prob. besides, my baja is not running as a back up vehicle right now. so I have to keep the truck bandaged for a bit..

ok folks. here is red neck turbo boots 101
suspect boots
redneck fix...
did ya get a good chuckle???
well hold your hats! here they are installed!!!
on a more serious note. I spray cleaned the turbo/ intercooler plenum line and the turbo elbow with brake parts cleaner to remove any oil or debris. along with the iar filter to turbo plenum.
I do not see a waste gate on this turbo
oh, have ya seen my authentic fleetguard oil filter???
I will see how it does while I search for replacement boots.
thought I was gonna say "hose" didnt ya
2 1/2" diameter silicone rad hose is 1 C note per 3 feet [:@][:@]
I will update as thingschange!

RE: Engine choking out at throttle up...
test run down the street in the neighborhood shows the tape to be working.
I only got it to 35 (posted is 30) on the mainneighborhood artery street (with peddle mashed). no "kick down" still. maybe thats all turbo/ plenum related.
guess we will find out after I find new "boots" .
