Default moral dilemma....

this is a toughy.... here's the story:
back in august and september, so about 5 or 6 months ago, i was in the market for a winch for my jeep. i decided on warn's new rock crawling winch, mainly because of the synthetic line and the overall weight of the winch. it totaled less than 70 pounds, including the mount, which made it so i didn't need to add spacers and heavier springs and all that stuff. anyways, since it was a new model, has great features, etc, it totaled about $1500 (msrp). well, only a fool will pay msrp when the internet can find you a much better price, so of course i visited site after site after site. i finally found one for about $1100 and i had an internet coupon that got me about another $100 off. anyways, i bought the winch and recieved it a few weeks later in about mid september. now the wierd part: a few days ago i get a tracking number from ups. i couldn't remember ordering anything lately that i hadn't already received, so i went on to see who shipped it and where it came from. so i called ups and was told it was 65 lbs, insured for $1000, but as for where it came from, all they could say was it originated in san antonio and it was sent by a distributing company. so i think to myself, that sounds a lot like my winch. i check and re-check all my credit card statements and debit accounts, and nothing (other than of course the winch i bought 6 months ago. lo and behold, a winch of the exact kind shows up at my apartment. now the really wierd part: the little plastic baggie envelope thing that normally contains the packing slip/shipping order, was clean cut open and no paperwork! the box i could tell had also previously been opened. but the winch is there. so now, not only do i have another winch, but i have no idea where it came from! the return address was from oregon and i couldn't find the company name anywhere online! it also just sounds like a distributing company. so what would you guys do? try your damndest to find out where it came from and return it as its not a cheap item (which is what i know i should do), or keep my trap shut and hope no one comes looking (what i want to do)? also, i went to the website i bought the winch from, and they don't have an personal shopping account that you log into and has your past orders etc. i wanted to look up and see if the order # on the box matched my order # ( i don't have my original box from 6 months ago anymore).

oh yeah, one other thing, my name on the shipping label was very slightly misspelled, but my name is unique enough that there's no way it could have been meant for someone else. and it was my full name, which i never use... any ideas at all????

I think you did the best you could to get it back so I would maybe hold on to it for one CC billing statement and then sell it $$$$$$.
If anything, I would NOT pay to ship it back to where it came from, let them pick up the tab if they want it back.

Thats almost like found money

why not just call the original company and ask if they recently sent you the another winch? if so, see what they want to do. you may be surprised. i can't see it being any other company. i mean come on, how and who would just send the exact same winch that you ordered to your shipping address. it obviously was a mistake on their part. give them a shout on the phone, and if by chance it can't be figured out, then you win. it'll be yours without any question or guilt (if your that type person). i usually just try to put myself in the business owners shoes, and do what i would want done, as i run a business myself.

that was my first response as well, but the first one was shipped and billed to the name i go by, and this one was shipped to my legal name, albeit slightly misspelled. they never had that name as that is not what is on my credit card. just another missing piece to the puzzle....

Not trying to flame anyone but it dosen't sound like they have a real good handle on their business if they double ship a $1500 piece of equipment without collecting before they do it.
