Default My first deisel has an oil leak

Just got a Ram 2500 CC 6.7 Cummings, had 16K miles (still Bumper to bumper)

has a small but noticeable oil leak from the front bottom of motor.

There is "drips" of oil from above the oil pan. (timing chain cover?). I am pretty sure the leak is NOT the oil pan gasket, as I have drips from above that.

My question, what would be my possible sources of the leak?

oil pan gasket

Timing chain cover

Front main seal????

Crank seal?? (same as front main seal?)

what else?

do any of these require the engine to be removed from truck?

Thanks for your input.

Normal

More than likely it is from the blow by hose located near the timing chain cover. Follow the drips. The probably come from a hose. Some guy's contain the drips in a soda bottle or something similar and dump it at every oil change.

Thanks Mayfair.

Is this the case for a 2007 6.7? Or are you talking about older models of Cummins?

Hard to believe this is the normal design. An intentional Oil Leak? On a new Truck????

Well, I did say my first Cummins Truck.

Is it a leak, or a drip? If you're seeing puddles then it's not normal. If it's spotting the driveway, it's normal on the 5.9's. I can't imagine that they were fixed on the 6.7's but I can't say for sure.

I am now being told that there should be NO oils leaks from this engine.

The "Blow by tube" on the 5.9's is not on the 6.7's.

If true then this is a problem that is not normal.

Can anyone confirm this?

TY

Can't speak from experience on the 6.7, but the crank case vent tube on the 5.9 that Mayfair is referring to comes off the drivers side of the valve cover about 2/3 of the way back on the engine and turns toward the ground. It ends near the top of the oil pan on the drivers side. If you look under there and it still on the 6.7 you should be able to find it pretty easy.

Have you checked your oil lately? If not I suggest that you keep an eye on it. I have seen several posts with high fuel content in the oil in the 6.7 motors. If your oil is over full or the level is rising over a period of time, you should have it checked out ASAP.

I hope you have the mx records for a used 16k mile truck. If not the dealer should. Maybe had a problem that the previous owner got tired of dealing with. I would check that vent tube. If not installed or not coming from that, check oil level, if high sample for you own peace of mind to make sure no fuel in oil. Let the dealer deal with it under the warranty.
