Pros/Cons for 6.7 vs 5.9
Ok guys, I'm a converted GM guy. I am picking up and signing on a 05, 4x4, Quad, Diesel, Laremine beautiful truck with 33,000 miles. Then I go to your fourm. Call me an idiot but I had no idea that the 5.9 was still being used in the newer trucks. What little I have found on the subject only confuses me more. I don't even know what the truck has yet. Everything else checks out ok with car fax. Not much history. 22,800.00 seems like a good price. The salesman is a wiesel but the dealer has a good track record with BBB.
Any comments about the 6.7 vs 5.9 ?

Welcome to DF...
5.9's rarely break or give trouble... 6.7's have been troublesome to some who use them as daily drivers. Mostly related to the exhaust and the DPF system.
If you've found an '05 you like with the 5.9 (only option) then go for it. Offer them 19.5k to start and see how low they will go.

Dodge used only the 5.9L Cummins up until December of 2006 (2007 model year). Somewhere around January 2007 they switched over to the 6.7L Cummins. I ordered my Ram in March 2007 and picked it up in May, and I was one of the first on this forum to have a 6.7L Cummins. I really like the engine. It is powerful and really smooth. Apparently the smoothness comes from more "injection events," meaning it injects the fuel in several tiny bursts instead of one big burst. It still sounds like a diesel, but there is less rattling noise and vibration.
The integrated exhaust brake is really cool. It really saves wear and tear on the brakes.
My engine has been trouble free. The check engine light came on a few times here and there, but it turned out to be nothing. I have been tracking the fuel economy very closely with a spreadsheet. It started out around 14 MPG and has gradually been increasing. Now it's up around 16.
I'm sure you will like your 5.9 Cummins. It should give you a good, dependable life and decent fuel economy. Good luck!

Either. I wouldnt be scared getting a 6.7. All ya gotta do is delete the DPF and block off the EGR, and itll be pretty reliable. Thats a new one though. A used one may have already had issues, so Id be somewhat wary there.
5.9 is proven rock solid. 6.7 would be too if it werent for the government stickin their noses where they dont belong...
The Common Rails (04.5+, including the 6.7) have a third injection event , which is basically an emissions deal. It acts as an in-cylinder EGR type of deal. Im not an engineer so I dont really know how it works, other than it, along with the high pressures of the Common Rail, help promote full burn of the fuel in the cylinder. 03-04 CRs only have 2 injection events.
The 6.7 has a fourth injection event, which is the shot that heats up the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to burn off any trapped soot. The new Smarty programmer is capable of deleting that, foe use in a DPF deleted rig...
As far as the strength of the 2, the 5.9 can hold well over 1000hp on stock internals. The 6.7 starts chuckin rods right around 1000hp...
You cant buy a new truck with the 5.9. Mid year 07 was when they switched to the 6.7. The actual switch was made in February/March 2007

I have a 6.7; love it so far. Only rode in a 5.9, the 6.7 is much quieter then the 5.9 in a good way. Both have more than enough power. I'm hoping by the time my warrenty runs out they will have more delete kits. I'm looking for of a bypass kit. I like the DPF but would like to use a cut out while i'm idle; haven't seen these kits yet. I think these type kits would save your dpf systems.

my 6.7 doesn't have any emissions stuff on it..lol. it went missing. the 6.7 is a larger displacement 5.9. they share a large percentage(around 40%-50%) of components. yes, the emissions stuff is a major pita on the 6.7. but if your willing to man up and get rid of them at the cost of your warranty (motor warranty), then you'll never look back. you get the added power of the 6.7, the integrated exhaust brake and if your an auto trans guy, there is no comparison between a stock 48 and 68 trans! my truck is missing the entire factory exhaust (dpf, muffler, cat, nox absorber), egr valve, and egr cooler. runs absolutely flawlessly!
