eeewww, furd!!!
sorry, had to do it, this is a dodge site.
smoke frome a diesel is more than likely a performance upgrade, but people that think its "cool" too leave a giant cloud at every intersection, will more than likely end up ruining a hobby that a lot of us love... i got to stop now before i make anyone mad...

Smoke is the result of overfueling until the turbo catches up......or can't catch up.
It's just unburned fuel from a lack of boost and HEAVY fuel system upgrades.
On mine I can turn the smoke up and down depending on the tuning I'm running, but even on the highest power levels, if I drive it like a sane person it makes very little smoke.....unless those friggin little Civics decide to dissappear behind the tailgate, then I try to clog their air filter.
Here's me and a few buddy's on the dyno with the fuel turned all the way up.....
The blue truck put down 626 HP, the silver 2nd gen put down 556 and mine put down 742 on these runs.

That and you need to pull the DPF off of it so it doesn't clog up.
Pretty much any of the modern diesels don't make any smoke at all in stock form.
From 2003 and up, the common rails are very clean due to the EXTREMELY conservative tuning from the factory.
The only time you'll see one smoking is if it's got mods.
