What kind of oil does everyone use in their CTD? Also, how often do you change your oil?

Jon
I use Dello 15-40 and change every 5,000 miles. I use the fleetguard filters for both oil and fuel. I change my fuel filter every 10,000 miles.

MOBIL-1 HAS A 5W40, CHRYSLER PART NUMBER 68001332AA THAT IS APPROVED BY CUMMINS AND IS DIESEL OIL.
I USE IT AND GET IT FROM MY LOCAL DODGE DEALER FOR $7.79 A QUART.
Thats sure is a very high price to pay for that brand & quality of synthetic oil. I can buy Amsoil 5w40 oil retail for $7.45 a qt or $27.55 a gallon and its cheaper if your a perfered customer. BTW by buying Amsoil I know I'm getting quality 100% synthetic oil.

I'm useing Fleetguard filters from Geno's, and Rotella oil. It DOES stink !! Someone mentioned running some sort of bypass hose back past the cab or something to help eliminate the smell, but I'm not sure which hose they were referring to. There IS about a 1/2" diameter hose near the fuel filter, is that the one? Not the skinny one comming off of the fuel filter, the other one.

check out "conklin.com" they have a moly based synthetic that me and my father have been running for over 15 years (me, 25+ for ol dad) I run 21,000 between oil changes with a factory filter change every 7,000. ran oil analysis and at that many miles on the old Powerstroke, my TBNs on the additives were still over 2.0 (the dodge is just now hitting 8,000 total miles and will finally recieve its first batch of syn. I plan to do a Oil Analisis with the base line now and one every 7,000 or so miles till the TBNs get into the twos. Maybe I will keep an up date and let you guys know how it goes. By the way the 15w40 cost me $100 for 5 gallons and with the oil change and 2 filter changes 5 gal will go the whole 21,000 miles.

I think with a TBN of a little over 2 should be a big worry with only 21K on it with the filter changed every 7K and make up oil added. My self I would either go to a shorter drain interval or better quality oil.

JMHO.

My personal thought is a TBN of 4 and above at 21K from quality dino oil. BTW I've seen 2 year old 15w40 Amsoil oil with a TBN of 8.14 on a 7.3L Ford Diesel with 30,000 miles on the oil. My self I think that is a good TBN for oil that has been in an engine for 2 years. IMHO with his TBN just above 2 at 21K with two qt's of make up oil was not that good for Synthetic blend oil.

Any ideas on where to get Delo-400 in California? Today I checked Walmart, K-Mart and AutoZone.

My local Wall Mart just started to carry Delo 400 LE in gallon jugs. Have you tried any of these parts houses, Pep Boys, Advanced Auto, Checker Auto, Napa, Schucks, O'Reilly, Parts Plus or a major truck stop like Pilot, Flying J, TA?

I just started this week with Amsoil 5w30 HDD in my truck @13K (I have used it in in the past on all my gas engines) and was surprised that it was a little qutier then the 5w40 (so called synthetic) Rotella I took out. Also I noticed less engine noise at start up and again at 55 and 70 MPH. Today I also noticed when I checked the oil that after132 miles it was not as black as the other oils I had tried before I switched to Amsoil. My self I think the Amsoil is cleaner at 132 miles then the other oils I tried were 3 minutes after I put them in.

JMHO

So are you saying Rotella 5w-40w is not a synthetic oil ? How so?
