I have a 2007 Ram 2500 Diesel 4x4 automatic and just returned from a camping trip outwest and noticed a leak from the engine after the motor cools down. I can drive it and notice no leak until it sets all night and then a small leak that appears to be getting larger, any ideas or suggestions.
What kinda fluid?? I'm assuming coolant. If it is coolant its only leaking after it cools down because things retract once it cools. Everything expands once its hot. Look at the water pump gasket, or wait till everthing cools and get a good flashlight and peek all around under there.
^^
I would second that. I had a water pump gasket that was going bad and would leak only when cold. Nothing too fast, but enough to leave a 2-3 in diameter puddle if It sat for a couple days.
Knowing the kind of fluid that is dripping is key to knowing what to look at and replace. Let us know what kind of fliud and we could help you better instead of guessing. A good general location of where at from the motor its leaking is also great help
I had the same thing and it turned out to be a failing thermostat gasket. Oddest thing, couldn't find a leak to save my life as it was always dry on the motor, wet on the ground overnight. Eventually traced it back to the thermo.
The water pump will leak through the weep hole when the internal seals begin to fail. In my case I was able to live with the leak for several weeks until I had time to swap out the water pump. I just had to add a little coolant to the bottle most every day.
You can get a dye kit for just about any kind of fluid. You just add a dose to the questionable fluid and look with the uv light and will tell you right where it is leaking just like CSI.
If it turns out to be coolant, check the 3" hose between the two metal tubes on the passenger side of the engine (above the turbo). There is an updated hose and clamps to replace it with. You can tighten down the clamps and it might stop, but I replaced it with the new parts on mine.
Appreciate all the input, found a defective water pump and transmission cooler hose leaking. I hope this is not an example and things to come on this Ram. Only 50,000 miles. My third Ram and the first one with any mechanical issues. I guess the 6,000 miles trip in three weeks boondocking the western US was a little rough on it, hope not.
