my pup (2 years old now) does not like having his nails cut and gets so worked up about it he pukes. so we stopped. he doesnt like the sound of it as anything similar also freeks him out.

Never had that problem, but maybe distract him somehow? play some music or turn the volume up on the TV? Our old dog didn't like it, and my parents couldn't do it themselves (I'm at college) so they started bringing her to someone to cut (and give her a wash) and we were told she was very receptive...
My Shep is the same way. It takes me and my wife the trim his nails.
We finally just figured out to get him to lay down, play with him a bit, one of us kinda sits near his head and blocks his view and gives him a few treats and he'll let you cut off his tail at that point.

We have no real trick, just sooth and pet him while it is being done.
We have also tried everything form our dremel , to the clippers ( witch his nails break every time ), and have settled on a combo of the dremel and side cutters( yea I know it sounds harsh and even crude but it works)

we started playing with Piper's paws when we got him. . .now that he is used to us handleing his feet he doesnt have much of an issue, but he's still a puppy and gets distracted VERY easily. we also clip his hair as well.
for an older dog I dunno.

Used to clip the dog's nails about once a month or so. He didn't like it, but would at least let me do it. Now I just walk him every day, gets him and me a little excercise, plus it keeps the nails under control.
Been here- done it.
He hates his paws being grabbed and thinks your gonna pull em' off- just like a horse. You have to play with them all the time and make him keep them in your hand. Just like horses who have a dang kickin' problem. Work with there feet and toe nails when not clipping and be nice- not just to clip them. As for the sound- I can agree with him-
I hate it to. Seriously put it on Animal Planet and make him watch while you play with his feet before it happens. My friend had to break her dog this way and it worked. We learned it online. My dogs- we play with there feet all the time. Thank goodness its the smaller lab that we have to hold down on occasion (his name is Rowdy and he lives up to his name). His feet get touched and he wants to play, play, play! Never feed your dog treats for tricks. Your affection is the greatest thing on earth- lots of love. But after the ordeal- give him a treat. Our dogs get a nice rawhide every once in a while. They had a bad day yesterday with us being gone. Keep in mind- Chompers is 130 pounds, Rowdy is 103 pounds. They were mad we went to work and chewed up our clean pans and got on the bathroom counter and took the soap out of the dish- that had to taste great! Just had to share with you. (normally not like that). Exercise is the best thing- you can also put them on a treadmill- not to fast! but that helps maintain there growth of nails also. Not as much as walking them in the neighborhood. Also try a dog park. Sorry so long- but my field of expertise hopefully soon.

thanks for the feedback! we've tried several thing, walking often hasnt helped, his nails just start pushing up on his toes. the vet gave us some meds to calm him down and that didnt really do anything for him, he still freeked out and ultimately puked in the middle of the night. My wife suggested I just do it while he's sleeping... says it should only take about 20 days [sm=icon_rofl.gif]
